He may not have had money but he has plenty of insider connections in the indie market. My comment about Kashyap was not in terms of the quality of his films but as a reference point to the Kashyap of the 90s who made Paanch as an emblem of the underground student film making with zero money.
There have been many addicts/alcoholics/convicts faaaaar more talented than Downey who were outsiders and petered out completely once they started showing up to work drunk or coked up.
Again not dissing his talent but RDJ was an indie film darling till the early 2000s and he was given chance after chance thanks to his connections.
I'm not talking quality - I'm talking micro budgeted avante garde films that made little if any money - Greasers Palace, Putney Swope, Pound etc - which were not a student phase but the peak of his career.
There are are not many actors better than RDJ, let alone faaaaar better ones who are also addicts. RDJ was given chances because of his mercurial and towering talent and because he was also always very well liked as a person. There are though many children of far bigger directors or stars who floundered with far fewer personal and work issues.
The connections helping him were his, not his fathers. Even in the 80s before his spiraling, he was far more successful than his father ever had been even though he was far from a blockbuster star.. He was an Oscar nominated actor for Chaplin before he hit the skids. David Fincher, Robert Altman, Oliver Stone, Richard Linklater, Jodie Foster, Mel Gibson, David E. Kelley, George Clooney etc didn't help him or give him work because of his father.
