Yes, it because how beautifully and subtly JKR has made Ginny. Often not when the main protagonist is male, the writers really mess up the opposite character, like you said..not exactly worthy. But here JKR made us believe that they were the best together. As a kid how i hated Cho, but was immediately onboard with Ginny.
