THE BEGINNING OF THE END
Chapter 1
Pallavi stood transfixed at the scene in front. She couldn't speak it seemed, despite the fact that a maelstrom was raging inside her. She saw disbelieve and horror on the faces of the rest of the family who stood equally shell shocked all around the place.
The air inside the courtyard felt electrified somehow. The scene itself was so damning that it was teetering at the edge of being completely ludicrous. Pallavi wouldn't have been shocked if suddenly temple bells start ringing in the background and lamps start being extinguished like a typical Indian soap opera.
Mandaar Deshmukh had officially lost his leftover marbles.. if there was any remaining to be brutally honest.
As if the fact that her ex husband was alive all these years yet remained unaware of his own identity wasn't shocking enough he seemed to have developed a psychopathic strain meanwhile. Pallavi had once thought that what might have occurred had Mandaar been alive all these years which she spent alone. Would have their steady companionship ever transpired into love?
But seeing this version of the man- this obsessive dangerous version she doubted whether it had been there all along and she had never noticed, too drowned in her idea of a family. Today, standing at the side line of the Deshmukh house courtyard witnessing him pointing a revolver at his own mother extinguished the remaining doubts from her head.
She would have never fallen in love with him.
Never...
She saw Vijay Deshmukh try to talk sense into his hyper cranked son but of no avail. How can a mad person see sense?
Sharda was standing as still as possible yet quaking like a leaf caught in a thunderstorm. Pallavi didn't know whether it was fear for her own life which made her mother tremble or grief at the downfall of her son's sanity.
"Pallavi! I don't know anything! You are coming with me that is for sure. I have booked our tickets and we are leaving now. No need to stay with these infuriating idiots in this house which has no privacy."
"Mandaar don't speak nonsense! And put the gun down! Lets talk like mature adults here okay. That is your aai you are.."
Pallavi tried to make her voice as non threatening as possible while she approached the clearly deranged man from the back. At one point of time, she might have fainted seeing a gun been held at someone whom she loves but after being in contact with a person who probably had twenty guns lying around in his bedroom itself had made her nearly immune to that thing. However vile she finds it.
"Mandaar.. beta.. please. I.. I am your mother.. why.."
"You are no mother of mine! Had you been my mother you would have supported me and 'my' wife instead of that moronic ba*tard! You care nothing about me! None of you do! Only Pallavi cares about me.."
"Please Mandaar, put the gun down. Someone will get hurt. I will come with you okay... just put that thing away."
"You would?"
"Yes.. please just.."
Pallavi had almost reached her destination while the rest of the family stood with bated breath, paralyzed still from fear and Mandaar had begun loosening up due to her gentle reassurances. Just a little bit more and she could snatch that infernal thing away.
Just a bit...
But of course, when had fate ever been on her side?
Pallavi would later think back and find she could literally pinpoint the exact millisecond from where it all went wrong.
Vijay Deshmukh in a stupid desperate move decided to leap in front his wife trying to shield her from them had Mandaar react spontaneously and shoot almost thrice in succession. Pallavi herself having been rendered speechless at the split second turn in events heard the the surroundings explode in frightened screams, so varied and so loud that it had nearly drowned the sound of the bullets.
Pallavi saw Mandaar gasp and drop the still smoking revolver as if it had suddenly burnt him and stagger back. Then panic swelled under her breast with such intensity that it rendered her breathless.
"Baba! No.."
She whispered fearing the worst. Her former father in law had jumped in front of Sharda, meaning.. oh god no!
Everyone tried to run towards the melee immediately and Pallavi finally managed to push Mandaar to the side harshly and stopped short. Her former in laws where still standing looking even more shell shocked as if that was possible.
But what sook Pallavi Rao to her core making the ground slip from beneath her feet in a swift and sudden move was the man standing front of them, teetering and disbalanced due to the onslaught of the bullets lodged in various places on his signature suit clad torso.
Her husband looked mildly surprised at being shot it seemed. His eyes a tad unnaturally wide as his face dropped three shades of colour reducing his handsome visage to a stark paleness which marked the ascent of his senses shutting down.
Pallavi felt her knees give way suddenly as if in tandem with Raghav's as he fell on his side like a puppet whose strings has been severed unceremoniously. Pallavi wanted to scream but her throat had completely dried up, her tongue and trachea swelling like a lead balloon which restricted her ability to breathe. She wanted to get up and run towards him but her knees seemed like they would never hold her weight again.
In the end she pushed her own shutting reserves to finally crawl towards him not caring if she looked ridiculous to the onlookers. She gathered him in her arms still trying desperately to breathe. It felt like her breath was a bird trapped under a stone beating against it bloody.
He was gasping too. Choking in his own blood surely if the red liquid pooling around them and dripping from his mouth was of any consequence. She felt her lungs suddenly give away as her trembling hands sought all over his torso trying to staunch the incredible level of blood flow, There was a ringing in her ears, it was so piercing that she was left deafened to any other sounds. So much so that she couldn't hear the gut wrenching scream which left her own mouth finally.
She saw his face contort in silent pain as he breathed waspily. She hurriedly wiped the excess blood from his mouth with the corner of her pallu as if that would help. She was aware she was trying to say something but it all got lost in between her incessant sobs. She saw Raghav raise his blood streaked fingertips with much effort to her cheek trying to wipe her tears no doubt.
"Eh... Saaree ka... dukaan.. kya kar raha hain.... itna accha saaree diya ha... pura.. ganda ho gaya... dur mein beithneka... tha naa.... "
"Raghav... please.. please.."
She couldn't say anything except parrot his name and a series of pleadings.
"I.. told you.. this Sankee Buddha.. will get me killed one day... tum hi nhi..ch mana meri baat.."
She saw him try to smile for her sake. Even in this state he was trying to lighten her mood.
He was mad.
He was a crazy, self sacrificing, noble, mad fool!
He was... he was dying.
"Please... someone... please!..."
She could hear sirens in the background. She could feel his warm blood soaking her utterly as she rocked with him. She could feel his hand slipping from her cheek and his breaths stutter like a withering flower and she could hear her own childlike wails drowning the surrounding sound of panic and chaos.
"I.. love you Pallavi... never forget... never..."
"Raghav! Please...I am sorry.. I am sorry... I love you... I love you... please... "
She felt the cracked splinters of her broken heart plummet within a fathomless, bottomless pit inside her deadening soul with his hand dropping from her face finally. It seemed like someone had ripped her chest open and pulled her soul out and tossed it at the remaining burning cinders of an overused fireplace.
She stopped crying for a fleeting moment and it seemed her universe had come to a halting freezing stop.
The blood curling scream which tore from Pallavi Rao's throat after that, would always haunt the recesses of the Deshmukh House and the in the minds of it's residents throughout the remainder of their pathetic lives.

Author's Note
Guys, I have forgotten to mention a few changes in my storyline. This is as you can guess, from the Mandaar track but in my universe Jaya and Keerti live separately still. They had come to stay with Raghav and Pallavi as per the deal but Jaya decided to move out after the necklace incident where she still believes Raghav was in fault as the latter didn't let Pallavi clear his name.
The rest is the same...
