MR has made some exclusive tamil movies in the 80s and early 90s which were of different calibre - Pagal nilavu, idhaya kovil, mouna ragam nayagan, agni natchathiram, Geetanjali/Idhayathai thirudathe, Anjali, Thalapathy, all of them are classics and music by Ilaiyaraja were biggest plus. These movies are close to my heart, can watch multiple times. They all have a strong storyline. MR already became a sensation in TN starting from 1984.

India knows him only from 1992 when he made Roja and ARR’s debut as MD and the rest is history😃

So true!! But goodness, it had bad critics then, I remember reading a review saying Anjali is too loud and has just a bunch of kids running here and there😒 I still cry at Anjali's climax.. Same applies to the rest of the movies.. Most of his movies leave a long lasting impact.. Both MN and Kamal Hassan chose movies that were way ahead of their time.. I love MN and Illayaraja combo as much as MN and ARR.
