Again, she cannot be credited more because she was barely funny in it. This is a comedy and it was the other cast members who are equally responsible for the success. Not to mention this was a Priyadarshan film. He already had films like Hera Pheri and Hungama prior to this so people were bound to watch. Then there was Akshaye Khanna who was also coming off of another comedy film, Hungama. Kareena's popularity had nothing to do with it, otherwise her films the year before would have been successful. If SRK's popularity couldn't make many of his films work then how can Kareena's popularity work in 2004 of all years? The story, director, comedy, and ensemble cast were responsible. No one more than the other.
Well....you do have a point that Kareena didn't provide many laughs in the movie. But still, Bollywood movies need popular actors for more exposure. So while Kareena was barely funny in the movie, she being in the film brought more awareness among the audience about it.
I agree that Priyadarshan being the director helped the film as well, so did the story, screenplay and every other technical aspect of the film, but I was specifically comparing Kareena with other cast members here, not the crew. Because I think that's what this thread is asking about.
Otherwise I don't think HAHK was an All Time Blockbuster only because of Madhuri, although many people including me are crediting her for that film on this thread. The success of HAHK first of all goes to Sooraj Barjatya, then it's music and songs, after that story and screenplay. Only after all that we could credit the actors, and on top of that list is Madhuri. But Salman is not far behind, and neither does the big ensemble cast of the film, who all played their parts to perfection. After all HAHK is remembered mostly for being a wholesome family drama. It didn't even have a hit item song like Dhak Dhak or Ek Do Teen. But still Madhuri being in the film brought a lot of branding.
Yes there was Akshaye Khanna who was coming after Hungama, but do you know that Hulchul was watched by much more people in theaters than Hungama? Even though I and I think many believe Hungama is a more superior film.
It wasn't even about Priyadarshan's goodwill of Hera Pheri and Hungama which made Hulchul a bigger Hit. Because Hera Pheri was still a bigger success than Hungama and Hulchul. As Akshay Kumar was and is still a bigger star than Akshaye Khanna and Kareena Kapoor.
There was a film named "Ye Tera Ghar Ye Mera Ghar" directed by Priyadarshan, which just came after Hera Pheri, but hardly anyone has heard of it let alone watch it. Reason is it didn't have a popular star-cast along with not being a great film.
Hera Pheri 3 didn't get made because Akshay rejected the offer. Even though most of the laughs in the previous two films were provided by Paresh Rawal, makers didn't want to make a third film without Akshay. Because they knew he brings alot of branding.
So yes, popular actors are needed in a film to make people more aware about it. Even if they are not technically the strongest point of it. That makes audience to watch the film in the first place. After that if the film is good, word-of-mouth takes over (something which caused Kareena's movies to Flop, because no actor can make a REJECTED film Hit, not even Salman), but for that again director and scriptwriter deserve more credit than the character actors.
