Why Kashi is preferred over Mastani?

We have two characters (Forget actors for a moment)

Mastani is a warrior Princess, at the time when women would walk around in Parda, she fought wars, proposed to the man she loved, even in her death she was a brave example for her son

KashiBai is a wife and her most significant scene was where she equated her husband’s fidelity to her pride, she moved on instead of crying over Bajirao

Who do you prefer?

I personally felt sympathy and more empathetic towards Kashi. I suppose in today’s era, it’s difficult to watch and accept infidelity even though it was the norm for Kings to have multiple wives and concubines. While watching the movie, I felt sorry for the heartbreak and sense of inferiority Kashi felt after her husband became completely obsessed over another woman. It also didn’t help that Deepika sucked as Mastani and made the character itself unbearable to watch. I’m sure the real Mastani was a bad-ass, but Deepika and SLB’s characterisation of her was leaning more towards a teary eyed, lip quivering character who was adamant that Bajirao was her husband because he gifted her with a knife.

I also think the reason why majority of people enjoyed Jodha Akbar was because the movie romanticised their love story. I’m sure if the movie showed Akbar’s other wives, then the audience wouldn’t have considered Jodha and Akbar as romantic historical icons.

Maybe our perceptions would be different if Mastani was portrayed by a stronger actress. I just couldn’t take her seriously and therefore liked Priyanka as Kashi more.

This happens in every show/movie where infidelity is a plot, someone who got cheated on gets sympathy but that reduces the whole existence to someone who is allowed to sleep with Bajirao, she loses her pride when Bajirao sleeps with someone else, do you understand what I am saying?
Imagine the place where you have put your pride

On the other hand, Mastani was a warrior, that alone makes me gravitate towards her

I am not talking about actors, I am talking about characters

I don’t like Jodha Akbar

I can connect with Kashibai due to stronger performance from Priyanka even though as mentioned she is wife and queen only in a general sense.

Despite being warrior princess, I can't fathom Mastani and her actions due to weaker performance from Deepika.

I believe that you can make your character stand out by acting even though the writing is not enough or paper thin. I hate the writing in this movie but loved the acting from majority apart from Deepika.

I get where you’re coming from. From what I recall, Kashi had married Bajirao from childhood onwards and therefore her whole life revolved around being his wife and closest friend. Regardless of the era, if you love someone (which she did), their infidelity will always hurt. The difference is that women had to suck it up and deal with it. Also, Bajirao didn’t just sleep with Mastani, he fell passionately in love with her and in the movie, started to prioritise her over Kashi.

I can’t comment on the real people because there isn’t enough information to provide insight on who and what everyone was like.I can only comment from the movie portrayal. The way an actor represents a character can make a difference on how you perceive them. Even if Mastani was a warrior, she spent most of the movie chasing Bajirao and looking like she was desperate for his love, even when he initially rejected her proposal. Her desperation put a sour taste in my mouth and I often wondered where she lost her pride running after a man when she was completely made to feel unwelcome and unwanted.

Because Mastani was a selfish homewrecker unlike Kashi? I mean the former literally stalked a married man for heaven's sake! 😳

That’s understandable yet there was nothing apart from her being cheated on

Obviously Priyanka put on a better performance than Deepika, and also Kashi drew more sympathy than Mastani.

But for me the biggest reason for preferring Kashi is that she's got a good head on her shoulders, and is a very grounded, sensible, "no-nonsense" woman. That famous dialogue where she asks "Kaunsa Dil? Kaisa Dil?", is what really sells Kashi's character to me- it shows that no matter what she would place her duty above all and just how much devoted she is in her marriage. I also like her inner conflict upon finding out Mastani is about to be attacked and that she holds the power to stop it.

Sure Mastani has the "cooler" character on paper- she fights, dances etc etc, but Kashi is the more complex and admirable one if you scratch beneath the surface. In comparison to her, Mastani comes across as a silly airhead who has got her head in the clouds.

Interesting perspective

Not everyone was a warrior Princess, Kashi had duties as lady of the house, so I agree here

IKR, I would never prefer such a person over someone who has been cheated on, so yes I would always prefer Kashibai over her no matter how brave etc Mastani was!! She was a homewrecker, and Bajirao too hurt Kashi so much and betrayed her!! I didn't like their so called "love story" because it felt so forced, as far as I remember, Mastani was hell bent on chasing his ass just because he presented a dagger to her or something, they both hurt Kashi and I ended up feeling so bad for her 😭 Priyanka's powerful performance, and the way she emoted through her eyes was very impactful whereas the less said about Deepika the better, she further ruined the character with her mediocre acting skills
