Actually, IMO it was mostly fear (and also people's quest for vengeance if they wanted to get rid of someone) that caused it. When we look at the era - life was really harsh at the time. People were plagued with fear, illnesses, wars etc. Religion mostly for a lot of people was driven by fear rather than spirituality.
Even King James had written a book on it. (He was actually a scientific man supposedly and was skeptical at first- an accused woman (a midwife) was presented to him and she confessed, he wasn't convinced but she told him something that made him believe so. )
That sounds interesting. Must check it out.
A similar issue albeit on a much smaller scale was handled on Good Omens too. (Neil Gaiman's book and show with the same name)
