I just found out today is Sunil Dutt's birthday (Jun 6), and wanted to post a song in his honor.

He's played so many different roles: from the suave, sophisticated and smart lover in Ek phool char kaante, to the lecherous and ruthless bandit in Mujhe Jeene do, to the bumbling and awkward Bhola of Padosan to the sensitive and understanding Adhir of Sujata.

I can think of many songs picturized on this accomplished and talented, yet always dignified actor, but one that stands out from the rest is 'Jalte hain jiske liye' simply because of the combination of Sunil Dutt's onscreen performance, SDB's magically lilting tune, Majrooh Sultanpuri's heart-stoppingly romantic lyrics and Talat Mahmood's exquisitely tender voice - all working to create inimitable magic.

Jab talak na ye tere ras ke bhare hoton se mile

Yoon hi awara phirega ye teri zulfon ke tale ❤️

dil mein rakh lena isse haathon se ye choote na kahin

geet nazuk hai mera sheeshe se bhi toote na kahin ❤️

(I swear I can feel the 'nazuk'ness of this geet in Talat's equally 'nazuk' voice!)

What a song! ❤️

Mausam hai aashiqana is such a beautiful song! ❤️ It's the raag YamanKalyan (or it is Yaman). Most songs in this raag are beautiful and this composition especially so because of Kamal Amrohi's lyrical poetry. It's among my top fav romantic songs by a female.

Jugnu hai zameen par utare huye hain taare! (such an exquisite thought!)❤️

Aa jao main bana doon palkon ka shamiyana

Add to this Lata's hauntingly beautiful voice! The entire song has a faraway feel to it - like it's being sung from atop a mountain and is echoing through a valley, bringing with it all the sweet pain of pining for your lover! Just so achingly sweet! ❤️

And what to say about Chalte Chalte? It's quite simply my favorite track from Pakeezah. Lata sings it so beautifully, and the sound mixing is simply wow- breathtaking! The distant sound of the train whistle and then the beats of the song begin and my heart lurches every time!

The lyrics by Kaifi Azmi are brilliant!

Shab-e-intezaar aakhir kabhi hogi mukhtessar bhi..

And then this line repeats, each variation bringing a new feeling a new emotion. How does Lata do it? 😭

Ye chiraag bujh rahe hain...

Achingly, heart-stoppingly beautiful composition!

Thank you, Madhu and Priya, for posting these!

The song, the melody, the expectation of the flourishing of life in romanticism, and at last the outcry of the crushed dream, all in all, a eulogy to a lyrical expression, which reflected in your words with such an emotional quotient!!! Thank you, Priya, for this melodious literary treat. 🤗❤️🤗

Today, I am dedicating this melody to all the music lovers of this place.❤️

Ishk par jor nahi .... I wonder what should I say that would work Priya! See the poetic lines directly from the heart. There is no control over love, this is that fire. That having been lit, still does not burn and having been extinguished, it still does not go out. These are the most well known lines from this ghazal, no guess why!. The poet says love is like a fire over which no one has any control. It is not in anyone's power to light the flames of passion in someone's heart despite trying nor is it possible to extinguish the flames of passion from someone's heart despite trying. Fairly straightforward lines on every romantic lover's twisted love life.

Wherever melody, Madhuri will be there AWe dear. ❤️ There is a melody in everything. And once you find the melody, then you connect immediately with the heart. Melody is a form of remembrance. A treasure in the memories' magic box.

Nukta cheen hai gham-e-dil usko sunaye na bane

kya bane baat jahan baat banaye na bane

Ishq par zor nahin hai, hai yeh who aatish ghalib

Ke lagaye na lage, aur bujhaye na bane

Such a beautiful thought about the essence of love. Hai ye woh aatish!! Wow! 😭

Thank you for posting this, Madhu!

Ghalib's poetry is incredibly difficult to set to tune, and Ghulam Mohammed not only just does that, but does it so incredibly well in this heart-wrenching song rendered so beautifully in Suraiyya's exquisite voice. ❤️ Again in raag YamanKalyan.. didn't I say there's something about this raag that captures the heart and entrenches the soul? ❤️

It's hard for me to pick a favorite song from Mirza Ghalib, so many incredible ones: Dil-e-nadaan tujhe hua kya hai, Phir mujhe deeda-e-tar yaad aaya, Aah ko chahiye ek umr asar hone take, and of course, Nukta cheen hai.

But this one sung by the incomparable Rafi holds a special place in my heart.

The poetry is so tongue-in-cheek, Ghalib manages to infuse some cleverly disguised self-praise in this one! 😆

Hai aur bhi duniya me sukhanvar bahut achche

kehte hain ke Ghalib ka hai andaaz-e-bayan aur! ❤️
