Because he did that no priest would come to do Shradh his house He told his wife not to worry and to do all prep. When everything was prepared he did the ceremony himself. He was so learned. Goes to show how strict society was in those days. Eating outside was unheard of.

Wasn't he against progressive ideas? I know he was against building high schools for women at that time.

Yes, the society was (and still is, in some sectors of India) conservative at that time.

I am not sure why there are no replies. But I have this to say. If any of what I said "hurts" anybody's feelings .... when I saw the way some sections of the society is portrayed it hurt some other's feelings too. This serial glorifies Ahilyabhai Holker a truly exceptional lady way ahead of her times. And Malhar Rao Holker who supported his daughter in law so much. How it came about is for anybody's guess.. To glorify someone does not mean you not portray somebody else in a bad light. You can show Gautama bhai and Khanderao in any way you like. They are not here to defend themselves. It is wrong to show them in bad light too. IMHO. But to show a section of the society that exists today as well in a bad way is wrong too. Blanket prejudices are bad. Blanket opinions are bad too. Just because one person is great that does not mean somebody else or some others are bad. As for the favorite line" If you don't like it do not watch" etc why should we not watch? How else would we know how much it portrays things in a wrong way? Everybody has a right to feel hurt and express their feelings. Take it in that sense. Do your research well when making such historic serials. We expect a lot. This is entertainment ki duniya is not an excuse. You have a social responsibility not to spread wrong ideas.

BOLD: I think this part isn't something anew in ITV.

There are shows in the past represented historical figures with a wrong notion. One of the Sony shows, Maharana Pratap, had questions regarding the portrayal of historical life & they glorified his fight with Akbar (he was portrayed as a villain but we know he wasn't) & his relationship with his first wife, Ajabde.

Even Prithviraj Chauhan (SP show in 2007) had questions because his popularity with Sanyogita was questions. I know his lovestory was a folkore in Rajasthan but the makers carved the story to please the audience because they knew that their popularity was thriving on his love story. There were certain characters that were questionable TBH.

Regarding sectors, Muslims get portrayed wrongly in some shows, so do some sectors such as wrong diction & whatnot. Marathi & Marwari sectors get portrayed by stereotyping them in what people have opinionated about them. I think we discussed how Tamilians/South Indian get wrongly portrayed.

I am not sure what was wrong with Rana Pratap show they twisted history with him and Ajab de and Akbar as well. They did show Akbar and Rama Pratap as some kind of friends. And Akbar respecting Rama Pratap. So it was not entirely off the track. Did not see about Pritviraj Chauhan. About the love story I believe he was married earlier and had wives before Samyukta. So don’t know how much of a love story it is in today’s times. Yes certain sections of the society are shown with terrible accents and OTT dialogues but that is nothing compared to. Brahmins who are portrayed wrongly . They are not Pujaris or school teachers all the time. What did they otherwise that is for CVS to research. As for blind beliefs it is the uneducated who have such beliefs not a learned person.

As for South Indians being portrayed stereotypically that happens all the time. In fact it is their favorite mis representation which they get it right every time. Haven’t seen Muslims being portrayed badly ? Which show?

Cvs if did their research properly, they'd be making documentaries which no one watches. Honestly it's these stereotypes that they keep portraying and they get solidified over time and if we ever see a more realistic and researched version on TV, ppl wouldn't be able to digest it.

They keep looking at everything with same lens and we barely see anything new. I've watched a lot of these historical shows and they all have the same plot/story no matter who the characters are. This show is the same too.

To glorify someone does not mean you not portray somebody else in a bad light.

That would require so much more nuanced story and character detailing, itni mehnat nahi karni, seriously we never see good written characters, proper/morally gray characters, we have the ML, FL and others are villains all around.

Idk what I'm writing but the point is Brahmins themselves have so much more diversity within their community and that is never portrayed in right light. The stereotypes we get are either colonial or anti-colonial/nationalist. Both equally harmful if not contextualised.
