Arnav, Khushi, Shyam - The Terrace
Hello everyone,
I'm back to posting another analysis and this is in connection to the previous analysis. In this post I'll be analyzing the terrace sequence and why (1) Arnav chose to confront Shyam instead of Khushi, (2) Khushi's shock on learning what a snake Snake Manure 'Jaa' is.
Rofl. Snake's name.🤣
Also this is in response to an ask on Tumblr:
- I understand Anrav has alot on his plate but I wish just like he decided to talk to Shyam he could have tried to ask her and then decide whatever he wanted even if it meant not believing a word of hers. But I see your point, he was infatuated with her, had JUST started believing in love and accepted it to himself, this must have have been like slap in the face. But it would be nice to have a moment between Anjali and Nani where they say “ke kuch to hua hoga to humein nahi pata” …and maybe they did and I missed it lol. But then again Arnav has all these layers to him that its hard to pick a side I guess,
Three Perspectives, One Perception
I have spent countless number of nights wondering why Arnav never went to Khushi to ask for the truth. He loved her - we all saw it, we saw the infinite Rabba Ve’s and the soul shattering stares. She is his soulmate and everything - we know it because we have been a part of their story from the very start.
Kind of like Devi Maiya, we know their story is predestined because we saw what they didn’t. Be it all the omens, the foreshadowing, subtext, etc.
But when Arnav goes to Shyam instead of Khushi - I felt betrayed by Arnav! How could he, how dare he! But then we have to take back and see this story from Arnav’s eyes.
Who Shyam is for Arnav - a father figure, a confidante and his dearest sister’s husband. He who keeps the family together, the reason for the Raizada’s smile, much like Khushi.
- Shyam, as a seasoned lawyer - does not deny what Arnav has seen. Rather, asks Arnav how much he knows to learn how much to reveal. We all believe a villain when he claims his crimes as opposed to one who pleads innocence. It’s only to his benefit that Arnav ends up baring all his thoughts and confusions to Shyam. Shyam knows there’s no saving his character, but a man as vengeful as him realizes there’s no need to save Khushi’s either.
- Arnav thinks he’s threatening Shyam - and he is, as long as he’s stating facts. But the minute he throws away his assumptions to Shyam - he has lost a battle even before it begun. Shyam confirms the affair and Arnav probably does not have the strength to hear it again from Khushi. What he has seen has killed him a bit already. If Shyam could’ve pulled wool for over three years, if his father could deceive his mother for several years, why couldn’t Khushi do the same for a few months? He loves her, which is exactly why he couldn’t ask the truth from her. He was afraid of what he’d listen to.
Totally agree with all the reasons except Arnav believing everything without thinking logically about how where and why?
- Khushi has no idea that her character has been assassinated in this process. Trained very much like the rest of Indian women - she does not tell anyone she’s been harassed or how Shyam has stalked her all along. If she had told it to anyone, things might have been very different. It only highlights how silence is never an option. She struggles between preserving Anjali’s marital life and her own trauma.
Yet she smiles at the thought of Arnav because there’s no chance - in her head - that he would misunderstand her. Why? Because Khushi has the fault of seeing people in the capacity of seeing herself. She knows she has a character, she can never imagine the conclusion Arnav comes to. She knows she wouldn’t betray a marriage, she cannot believe that Shyam had stalked her all along.
Garima made Khushi swear not to reveal about Shyam
Buaji knew Snake was stalking Khushi but didn't warn Khushi or watch out for her
Payal imo was too self absorbed in her own bubble to even fathom how Khushi was coping with being around Shyam
They all acted like nothing happened and left Khushi to deal with the consequences of their decisions.
Payal was another Anjali who stayed in her cocoon always.
It's funny how the suffering and silence was expected only from Khushi. If it were Payal who suffered what Khushi did at hands of Shyam and if it was Khushi's wedding to Arnav the Guptas wouldn't let the wedding happen because they'd care more for Payal's pain than Khushi's happiness.
Anjali & Nani
Yeah, more than the ‘oh the house pride is gone’ it would’ve been interesting if the two women sat and thought why in the world would Arnav elope with Khushi when they were already planning their wedding? I often wonder what answer Arnav/Khushi would have to give if that was the question thrown at them. It’s like stealing food when you have a buffet laid out in your honor. Did they really frighten Arnav with the possibility that they’re getting Khushi married to NK? Which would highlight that jealousy is terrible when it comes to matchmaking!
It’s like literally no one would have a problem with their relationship either way and it’s a bit odd that no one communicates that to either Arnav or Khushi. Instead they pretty much harp on the values of sindoor and mangalsutra and I’m like that’s not really going to give an answer nor motivation! They probably think they eloped because Arnav/Khushi might have crossed boundaries in their relationship. But I think most of this track is really focused on ‘maan’ ‘maryada’ ‘samaaj’ ‘riti riwaaz ka ulanghan’ and to an extent I can see why they see things that way.
Nani and Anjali are hypocrites who have more problem with Arnav marrying without their approval than being glad he finally married to a girl they liked. They told Arnav they were planning to get NK and Khushi married. Arnav didn't know that they wanted Khushi for him. Neither did Khushi know that.
They so easily accepted Payal to for Akash so where was Nani's opposition to LOVE marriage. All the drama was only for Arnav first with La and then Khushi.
Though Anjali was more welcoming with her Puja thaal to Lavanya who came in as Arnav's gf than his wife. Where were these lectures on MAAN Maryada and Samaj then? If La was heading to Arnav's bedroom to have a shower in front of the family then clearly they were into a physical relationship without marriage or were going to start one. Only Nani disapproved of La and Arnav sharing the same room but Lavanya was proudly showing off herself as Arnav's gf in his professional space and personal space in fact their live-in was all over media but Anjali was okay with it then why was Anjali pouncing on Khushi along with every one about family's respect etc?
Obviously they assumed Arnav had a love marriage not a hate marriage so what kind of respect did they give his marriage or wife the girl they supposedly wanted as Arnav's wife. Mami was downright vicious to Khushi.
Arnav told Khushi she'll be his wife only for the world then where was his behaviour as a husband when Khushi was humiliated by Mami repeatedly. His whole facade of a happy married couple fell off when he let everyone insult Khushi.
ALSO WHERE IS MAMA JI? He eloped and married as well - this would’ve been a perfect time for Mama and Arnav to have a talk!
Given that Nani didn't accept Arnav's choice wonder why and how she'd have accepted Mami almost 25 or 26 yrs ago.Love,
S
Please get all your Tumblr posts here. I miss discussing it with my friends. Every time I watch your podcast with and Ridz I am like what would I do to be a fly on the wall when you discuss it. I know the level of craziness in the discussions with my friends so I believe there is more crazy stuff than you share on the podcast. 🙊
Hey, I really liked your analysis.
But I come to wonder, a person like Shyam (they are all around us) - well behaved infront of others, thoughtful and outwardly caring - No wonder Anjali and Shyam's relationship seemed perfect. How he called her Rani Sahiba, and treated her like a Queen, she had no reason to doubt her husband. In initial episodes, he also shows a lot of maturity when he advices other people at home. Shyam is also liked by all. Even by someone like Arnav, and we come to know he has been married to Anjali for two years already.
Arnav - so bitter, angry, often controlling. Is he angry at Khushi, or also himself? Someone who doesn't believe in love and marriage (a past where love and marriage resulted in his beloved mother being cheated on and both his parents committing suicide - and he knows his father is to blame for it). He never let anyone in, always shutting others out.Never trusted anyone. Finally starts to fall for Khushi and is devastated to See Khushi & shyam together. Not just his love but also looses the faith in the love he had between Anjali & Shyam. Anjali, who is so naive, innocent, devoted and loving.
He hurts Khushi, and also himself. I don't see him punishing just Khushi.
Khushi is a kindhearted girl, who knows.. that she had hurt him, but didn't know why and how. She is a girl who can find happiness anywhere, literally a girl who IS happiness personified. Inspite of everything Arnav did to her, she can see his pain too.
Akash & Payal are the perfect foil for both Arnav & Khushi.
Akash, always calm and caring towards everyone. Even when he is angry at Payal, he shows his displeasure but never does once get physical towards her. Payal also has a calm personality very unlike her sister. Both Payal & Akash are able to communicate really well with each other.
I have often thought if their names add more to their personality - Akash (like an open Sky - he doesn't have any hidden aspects to his personality or emotions, its easy to read him), Payal - perfectly grounded.
Khushi - Sacrifices for the happiness of others pretending to be happy, makes people happy wherever she goes.
Arnav - Ocean - his love and emotions seem deep as the ocean, and maybe even buried. May seem like
As people, we would definitely want a relationship that is more like Akash & Payal.
Arnav probably needed a lot of therapy but, both of them are able to overcome their feelings of hate and misunderstandings - they are able to see each other at last. We can see that things aren't perfect between them but they are able to evolve themselves, and even change. (Probably the pride and prejudice effect). Because, both of them have a heart of gold underneath - that beats for only each other, in spite of everything, they are able to see and get past their mistakes.
When Arnav finds out about Khushi's amma being the woman his father cheated his mother with, its the love & memory of his mother that reaches him and shows him the light to finally let go and see past the pain. The pain that engulfed and haunted him throughout his life, he is able see Khushi, the love of life through it, like a light at the end of the tunnel. He is able to overcome his past finally.
While, people like Shyam who are so well behaved are scoundrels underneath and remain so till the end. He is never able to see the love Anjali has for him.
For me, it's more of a journey of self realisation and self discovery, while discovering each other. It's about love changing who and what you are, how someone can overcome their flaws because of love :-)❤️

He rightly predicted that Khushi believes in the sanctity of the marriage and he can't get her married to someone else at a short notice. So, he decided to marry her and hence the clause of 6 months. He assumed Khushi won't go after Shyam as long as she is married to him. He doesn't want to get himself tied to Khushi forever. That is why he kept saying he is waiting for the 6 months to finish, so that he can throw her away from his life.
Now why did Shyam, stayed with Anjali? He thought he got his way as he initially predicted and he thought he can still manipulate Anjali, get to Arnav's coffers and get Khushi, but, he did not expect Arnav to marry Khushi.
Now that Arnav knows about his intentions, Arnav won't leave Shyam if he harms Anjali.
Since Shyam can't get Khushi, he has no other choice but to play a besotted husband to Anjali. According to Shyam, things haven't gone out of the hands as yet.
I wondered for a while why Arnav stopped cash flow to the joint account? I thought it would irritate Shyam forcing him to take a wrong step.
May be they (the makers) thought it will look like Arnav is buying the services of Shyam for Anjali.
According to them ASR can only order or demand or threaten So, he threatened Shyam that Khushi is off limits and he better stay with Anjali and behave.
I don't know whether I am making sense, but this is what I am thinking right now.😊
Cheers......
😊
I think Arnav's decision as a brother was not wrong at that point of time, Shyam was actually trying to KILL Anjali. He would have most definitely succeeded in hurting her, his being married to Khushi saved Anjali's life.

It's not that they got married without approval.
They felt hurt that they didn't involve them, being their elders in the decision. It' not about love marriage. Marriage is a big decision, so in a culture like ours, not involving elders is like not seeking blessings - like feeling that they aren't important enough to be in such an important decision and ceremony of life.
The drama with Lavanya was because Naani didn't like her (Anjali didn't dislike her but she did feel that she isn't suitable for Arnav or the family) - and its not about wanting a modern versus traditional bahu - Lavanya was really silly & ridiculous at first. She was immature. Who dresses up like this to meet a grandmother. It's not about being misogynistic, or being 'modern' - but about having some sensibility and regard for others in general. Which Lavanya does realise and shows in her behaviour later.

I have issues with Nani because she said love is destructive when Arnav was dating La but love was okay for Anjali and Akash.
I also understand about culture and elders blessings etc but all that was compromised when Arnav La were openly living in together without Nani's blessings so she should be thankful for it.
If they were upset at not being involved in the decision or part of rituals they could have simply accepted the marriage and given their blessings and conducted the rituals again instead of so much drama as if they did some crime. Why welcome Khushi with so much gloom. Weren't these same family members okay with letting Akash Payal happen without Mami's presence.
I agree with you on Lavanya. She was really rude and treated others who didn't match up to her standards badly. Eg how she treated the old house help or how she behaved at AR or RM with Khushi.
Anjali didn't dare to question let alone call out La when Police was called to their home on Janmashtami citing reasons like it's celebration but Arnav's marriage wasn't a celebration or some good event so everyone had to pounce on Khushi for marrying Arnav.
Again when Khushi was getting thrown out by Dadi without cheap accusations these same two ladies supported Dadi not Khushi. That's where Nani and Anjali were hypocrites.
Why a character behaved a certain way and whether we approve of it or not, are two different things.
Here the point is, Arnav never sought Nani and Anjali's approval nor he ever involved them while making big decisions. He does things on his own and he simply announces if there is a need.
His decision to buy SheeshMahal,
His decision to help Akash marrying Payal,
His sudden announcement to marry Lavanya on Diwali day,
His decision to break up with Lavanya, are few examples.
He was his own boss and he never believed in traditions and rituals.
Nani and Anjali should know better. His actions should not shock them.
Coming to traditions and rituals, Nani and Anjali were not shown as strict believers of traditions either.
They followed them when they suited them and they let some go citing reasons that it is for a good cause. There is nothing wrong in it.
Arnav marrying Khushi is one of those good causes. Isn't it?
I understand that they were upset because they missed out on a bigger celebration. Continuing the charade longer than needed and pouncing on Khushi are definitely not needed.
I agree they believed that Khushi is not a person who will get married without elders blessings. I agree they believed that Khushi can make Arnav do things against his will. Making him to agree to Payash's Sangeeth and making him to attend Janmashtami pooja are few examples.
Khushi was still in the house when Arnav decided to break up with Lavanya after announcing that he will marry Lavanya. So, in bigger decisions no one could influence him. Nani and Anjali should know that.
As someone said in an earlier post, Nani and Anjali should have had a talk about the reasons. Were they in love with each other that they could not stay away from each other or was Khushi pregnant which made them to get married in a hurry?
Cheers.....
I disagree that Arnav La lived in different rooms and Arshi lived in the same room so there is a difference in that and hence Nani and Anjali reacted differently. Everyone has a different perception to see things.
La was to share Arnav's bedroom when Arnav got her to RM to live in and Anjali welcomed them with Aarti and all like a married couple. Anjali was okay with it. It was later Nani objected to La sharing the room which angered Arnav. So why didn't Anjali find Chote Galat then.
Their marriage was legal and Hindu or any marriage done legally is and has to be acceptable by society. If Khushi wanted she could have got it annulled since it was by force.
Nani and Anjali however weren't concerned if it was under force or duress. They were concerned about their traditions.
A girl's respect character and dignity was ripped apart but they stood quietly letting it happen. No they would have got it resolved later isn't acceptable. Nani Anjali felt sad for La but not Khushi who was actually married and labeled characterless. Imo they changed their traditions and stands on them as per their convenience.

You nailed it
Anjali welcomed La and Arnav with aarti and wanted La to stay even after the break up because Arnav lived with her and it would be wrong to let her go like that.
Khushi who was legally married to Arnav and was his wife for the world stayed with them for longer than La and saved Arnav's life etc had to be welcomed and thrown out unceremoniously in Arnav's absence.
Bina Shaadi ke sab kuch kar sakte vs bin phere hum tere.
Lol if the word got out that Arnav was staying with Khushi without marriage given how they reacted Arnav would be labeled as the Man who stays with live in partners along with his family and changes the partners at least twice a year. What a family of Maan Maryada and Izzat. Guess whose upbringing is problematic.

I think it was ridiculous if Arnav really expected that Naani will let Lavanya stay in his room. 😆
I know they can't really force to make him do what they want, but its not like Anjali or Naani would have given up that easily, they will try to influence him in their own way. He still had to listen to them at the time that Lavanya could not stay in his room.
Also, anullment is a really difficult thing to do, one has to prove that the marriage cannot be consummated because of impotency. In an Indian society, being divorced and having a marriage annulled is same. They just simply ask if you have ever been married or not. She would never really want her marriage over - for a girl like her, it was for life time. Naani & Anjali never called Khushi characterless, they never called her any names.
In fact, I know people find Anjali stupid for being naive. But she wasn't stupid - she was naive, and blind in love. When people are truly innocent and good at heart, it's inconceivable to them that the ones they love and trust are not what they seem to be. Even though she had suffered so much pain, she was hurt but she was never bitter towards her Arnav or Khushi. Angry - yes, hurt- yes, but never bitter. It takes a special kind of strength and wisdom to do that.
