Pallavi’s nervousness overcame her, she decided it was best just to test Raghav, she got up quickly and walked to the vanity, tying up her hair, “It’s been a long day, should we go to sleep…?”
“What, I—oh.” Raghav’s face fell. What should he do now, he didn’t want something artificial tonight.
Pallavi noticed his expression in the mirror, and turned around, “what, did you have something else planned?”
Raghav looked at her, he had never been this nervous in front of a woman in his life, what hold did this woman have over her?
Then he noticed Pallavi’s grin, and he realized she was messing with him. He walked over to her and grabbed both her wrists, “mujhse panga lena ka galthi math karo.”
Pallavi smiled, and her hands moved to Raghav’s chest, “Agar main yeh galthi kar bhi diya, toh kya?”
Raghav grinned, and kissed her cheek, whispering in her ear, “are you sure you want to find out?”
Pallavi’s pulse started beating faster, the goosebumps on her arms, “kyun, tumhe lagta hai main dar jaayegi?”
“Nahin, but you might be very surprised,” Raghav smiled.
Pallavi turned around and started to get a change of clothes out of the cabinet, but Raghav pulled her by her wrist closer to her. He was standing behind her, moving her hair to the side.
Raghav could feel his heart beating faster, he kissed her neck. His hands moving down Pallavi’s arms, finding her waist.
Pallavi smiled, and in a breathy whisper, “Raghav…” She turned around to look into his eyes.
Raghav pulled her closer and kissed her cheek again, he sensed her nervousness though.
“Are you okay, do you want to stop?” Raghav asked, letting go of her waist and taking a step back.
“No” Pallavi smiled, took a step forward and got up on her toes and kissed his lips.
It was electric, Pallavi felt like the earth was shaking beneath her feet.
Pallavi’s lips were soft and Raghav felt emboldened by the scent of the flowers in her hair.
He pulled her close and kissed her deeper, his hands moving from Pallavi’s waist up to her neck and face.
Pallavi pulled away for a second, blushed and looked down after meeting Raghav’s eyes, and started to walk backwards to the bed, her hands in Raghav’s.
Raghav followed her, enchanted by her boldness and his mind empty of all thoughts except those of his wife.
As they met in bed, Pallavi realized she had never felt safer than she did in Raghav’s arms. Raghav could feel every worry, every drop of anger in his life disappearing with every kiss, every embrace, every glance.

The next morning Pallavi awoke as the sun hit her face from behind the curtains. She opened her eyes and looked up, Raghav was fast asleep. She was asleep on his chest, his arm around her. She knew she should get up and start on breakfast, and all the other work in the showroom, but looking at Raghav’s peaceful face, feeling his steady breath against her, she couldn’t move. She realized she wasn’t wearing her wedding sari anymore. Then last night flashed before her eyes. She smiled and laughed a little remembering how after they had made love she had tried to go put on a kuntha and pajamas for bed, when Raghav had pulled her back to him and put his wedding kurtha on her.
“I don’t want you leaving this bed for even a second, Mrs. Pallavi Raghav Rao, not. one. second.” Raghav kissed her forehead and each cheek after the last three words.
They had fallen asleep laughing and talking deep into the night.
Raghav shifted a little, and Pallavi looked up at him again.
“Just because I love you doesn’t mean you get to take advantage and sleep on top of me every night, Saree ka Dukaan.” Raghav smiled.
Pallavi was suddenly nervous, “Sorry, I just—“ she got up quickly and started to get out of the bed.
“Arre, I was just kidding!” Raghav grabbed her wrist again and pulled her back on top of him, “I don’t want you to leave, ever.”
Raghav kissed her, deeply, his hands moving up her waist and then he was on top of her. Their eyes met, and Pallavi grinned and moved up to kiss him again when Raghav’s phone rang.
“Let it ring, no work today.” Raghav grinned, as he kissed Pallavi again.
But when the phone rang again, Pallavi pushed Raghav off her and said, “looks like the real love of your life, Farhad, really needs you for something.”
She grinned and got out of bed, laughing amidst Raghav’s curses to Farhad as he picked up his phone.
Pallavi ran to the bathroom, when she looked at herself in the mirror she hardly recognized herself. She tried, but the smile on her face didn’t seem to want to leave. Lost in everything that happened last night, Pallavi showered and got ready for the day. She chose a red sari, a color she used to hate. And as she opened her box of sindoor, she smiled at the fact that she didn’t have to be afraid of the color anymore. She had the complete right to wear red now, and even if no one was stopping her before, now she would be able to wear red because she wanted to. She looked at the sindoor in her hair, now this sindoor wouldn’t remind her of a life she thought she’d lost, but a life she couldn’t wait to live.

Raghav, getting dressed quickly, was barely paying attention to what Farhad was saying on the phone, he was waiting for Pallavi to come out of the shower, he had a wedding gift for her. He knew she would think it was too much, he had already given her the bracelet, and that simple diamond necklace that she’d chosen from his safe, but after last night he remembered how insane he had been when he first asked her to marry him. Then he had been furious at her, he thought he hated her, he had rolled up a 2000 rupee note into a ring and tried to put it on her. But yesterday when he was getting the temple jewelry for Pallavi to wear at the wedding he noticed a magnificent diamond in his recent stock. It had been cut, but a very simple cut, and just like Pallavi’s bracelet, the stone was set against a silver band, not gold.
He was looking at the ring, thinking about how he would give it to Pallavi, when Farhad yelled on the phone, “Anna, are you listening to me, it’s urgent, an elderly person who lives at your old-age home are in the hospital, and his son is threatening to sue for negligence! Obviously he doesn’t have a case, but I don’t think we can keep up this ‘Ramaswamy’ charade anymore, Anna, you have to come here.”
Raghav was barely paying attention to Farhad, Pallavi had left the bathroom, and she took out the necklace Raghav had gifted her and was putting it on in front of the vanity. Was this the moment, Raghav thought, should he give it to her now? He didn’t want her to think he was throwing gifts or money her way, but he also knew that she would love this ring. He got up, the ring in one hand, his phone (with Farhad yelling into it) in the other. He was about to pull Pallavi around to him when he heard a strange voice on the phone, “Listen, Mr. Ramaswamy, or whatever your name is. If you don’t get down to this hospital this goddamn minute, I will make sure to sue you for every goddamn paisa you have.”
Raghav’s brow furrowed. This so called son, who had placed his parent in an old age home, was now not only threatening to sue him, but he had the audacity to take Farhad’s phone and then the nerve to yell at *him*. He made to leave the room, but Pallavi stopped him.
“Raghav,” she smiled and fixed his suit jacket collar, “have a nice day. And she kissed him on the cheek.
“If Farhad wasn’t such a dummy, I would be locking that door and neither of us would be leaving for any stupid work, the *day after* our wedding.” Raghav complained.
“Don’t blame Farhad,” Pallavi laughed, “I don’t think people get a day off the day after their *second* wedding.” The she went downstairs to make breakfast and leave for work.
Raghav sighed and put the ring back in his pocket, he’d give it to Pallavi tonight. He quickly said bye to Amma and Keerthi, ignoring the grin his sister was giving him. Keerthi would have to make fun of him when he got home tonight. As he drove to the hospital address that Farhad had texted him, thoughts of last night filled his head. Pallavi, who he knew always had that ‘courage’ like a parinda, had been exceptionally bold last night. He almost missed the exit for the hospital thinking about the way his wife’s eyes had glittered in the moonlight last night, how soft her lips felt against his, laughing to himself thinking about how much the both of them had talked and laughed last night.
Finally he reached the hospital.
Raghav’s mood didn’t get better once he left the car to meet Farhad. It turned out the so-called “doting son” who was going to sue him for his elderly father’s injury was a major fraud. Mainly because his father, one of the oldest residents of the elder care home, loved Raghav (though he knew him as Ramaswamy). Unluckily for his greedy and uncaring son, as soon as Raghav entered the hospital room, he explained to Raghav exactly how he had gotten hurt. (This man had tripped over a rock, *outside* of the care facility, going to get a present for his granddaughter).
Raghav smiled at the old man and then turned to the son, “Listen duffer, instead of being Hyderabad’s worst lawsuit generator, take your father home with you to visit his granddaughter. Also, next time you try to threaten me with so much as a gift that I don’t like, remember that it is *my* generosity that ensures your father stays here at a fifty percent discount, so take your greedy attitude and your ugly face, and go bother someone else.”
As Raghav and Farhad left the room, Farhad apologized to him for the inconvenience. Raghav waived off the apology, his mood was a little better now, he just had a few things to do and then he could go back home and think of a surprise for Pallavi.
Raghav quickly walked through the halls of the hospital, desperate to get back home, and then as he passed a patient room, he stopped dead, and doubled back to take another look at the person inside.
