Pfizer and Moderna vaccines cannot be used in India. It does not have the cold chain facilities for mRNA vaccines other than large private hospitals in metros for it's storage.
Even if it is free and 95percent effective what's the point of getting it into India if it cannot be sent safely without it going waste to majority of the population. We don't have refrigeration systems in small and rural health centres to store Pfizer
India can use covishield and covaxin more effective along with sputnik all three manage fine with limited cold chain that India has and that is why they were given preference for trial and approvals.
Plus the fact is how much units can Pfizer and moderna provide. Each vaccine has to be given twice. They cannot match the production of Covishield Covaxin and Sputnik. We are 130 crore people
US was restricting raw materials to force India to pick up US owned vaccines to promote their country's company they have every right to do that. If India was in that position to flex muscles it would do so to for home companies.
But is Pandemic the best time for US to be protectionist for that matter any country
Fortunately the raw materials have been released now and we can have covishield covaxin and sputnik as well.
Pfizer and Moderna may become available eventually in the private hospitals to make up the shortfalls if the other three vaccines are not able to produce enough.
First of all, Moderna can be stored in a refrigerator. It doesn't need deep freeze like Pfizer. Second of all, most of India's 1.3 billion people remain unvaccinated. You can simultaneously use several vaccines and perhaps use the large centers for Pfizer vaccine. No one is going to credibly claim AIIMS centers around the nation don't have the refrigeration capabilities. Or the IITs. Or the space centers. Or the military.
The U.S. also has AZ vaccine stockpiled (same as Covishield). 40 million doses which it is not using at all! But India did not even request supplies despite Indian-American lawmakers clamoring for it to be released.
Nope, the Indian government wanted raw materials which would take time and money to process. They did not want the readymade vaccine.
U.S. flexes its muscle with and without need, pandemic or otherwise (in fact, doesn't do it where it is actually needed, like with China). This was about looking out for its own, not flexing muscle.
But what the government in India is doing is either corrupt or mind-bogglingly incompetent.
This is not about U.S. or India or which political party is in power. This is personal for me. I have parents back home who are waiting for their jabs. I have aunts and uncles and cousins I'm worried sick about. I have 2 very dear friends who recently tested positive.
I'm supremely angry that the lives of my loved ones are at risk while someone makes money off the vaccine deals. B******s. May they rot in hell.
