Raghav got back to downstairs to the wedding bonanza faster than Pallavi, wanting to make sure everything is ready.
He saw that Rahul was already getting his haldi, and Mansi was waiting patiently for hers. Amma and Keerthi ran up to him, and both of them pulled him to his seat, he was dressed in a traditional Telugu man’s white dhoti with a yellow trim, and a pale yellow kurtha, the buttons of which were obviously mostly undone because he was Raghav Rao after all. Amma and Keerthi applied haldi, and Raghav was barely paying attention as Aai, Asha Aunty, and what seemed like dozens of other women started applying haldi on his face, hands, and feet. All he was looking at were the stairs, where was Pallavi.
Then he saw her, her hair was in a loose bun at the nape of her neck, covered with one or two long strands of Indian jasmine. Her neck and arms were bare of any jewelry except for the bracelet he had given her, and that simple diamond necklace. She was wearing the simplest ruby studs in her ears. Her lehenga was long and flowing, pale yellow, almost matching to his kurtha. The dupatta sheer and draped along her left arm. But Raghav barely noticed all this, all he could see was her smile. As Pallavi walked down the stairs, she was immediately elated upon seeing Mansi’s excitement at getting smeared with haldi by Amruta and Asha Aunty. How even Sulochana Kaku’s mood was good today. How Milind Kaka was basically unable to hold back his happy tears. Then she caught Raghav staring at her, she blushed and looked down, then catching his eye again she looked him up and down and gave him a “not bad” expression. He laughed and returned the look. As she got to the bottom of the stairs, Aai and Nikhil came up to her.
“You took way too long, Pallavi,” Aai chastised, “come quickly!” And she pulled her to her seat, directly across from Raghav.
Amma brought over the haldi from Raghav’s rasam, and gave it to Aai, “shall we start?”
Pallavi had to hold back tears as Aai placed haldi on her face, her hands, and feet.
“I knew, that one day you would find a new sasural, but even though it’s been over a month, I can’t imagine the idea of having you leave again.” Aai said, choking back tears.
As Amma started to apply haldi, she said, “Pallavi, I never thought I would live to see the day where my son, would do something not for his own benefit, but for someone else, you are the daughter-in-law that I never expected, but I always hoped to to one day be lucky enough to welcome.”
Raghav’s eyes were filled with tears, as he watched Amma, Keerthi, and Pallavi overcome with happiness. He prayed that nothing would hurt them, nothing could come between them and their happiness, and that nothing would come between him and Pallavi.

Baba was standing away from everyone, confused at everyone’s happy mood. Yes he was happy that Mansi and Rahul were getting married. Yes he was happy that Pallavi was happy, that Sharda and Nikhil were elated. But he couldn’t avoid the thought that all this, whatever Raghav had done, would come to hurt Pallavi in the end. He had to fix this, Pallavi may have said she had forgiven him, but she would never really come back to Deshmukh Nivas until he could show her what a destructive, cruel, and disloyal man Raghav was.
Pallavi tried to catch Baba’s eyes as everyone started dancing, Mansi had pulled her to her feet to get her to dance with her, but after a few halfhearted steps, Pallavi just wanted to make sure that Baba was okay. She knew that her decision to stay with Raghav after that day at the showroom opening had hurt Baba, but Baba didn’t know how much Raghav had changed. Baba didn’t know that everything that Raghav had done had a reason. Even if Raghav was wrong, even though Raghav had hurt her and everyone in her family, he did it because he thought he was avenging his family. She knew now that Amma was wrong when she had asked her to marry Raghav. She didn’t have to change Raghav’s ways, she just had to get him to feel safe enough to share his problems, his fears, his hopes. Because Raghav was and always will be Amma’s son, Keerthi’s big brother, he wasn’t a bad man, he was misunderstood, and throughout his life, the wrong choice always rewarded him in his world, but in the past month and a half, Pallavi had seen him recognize how the right choice could always be a reward too, no matter how difficult it was.
As she tried to look for Baba she felt someone pull her by her wrist and waist away from the crowd and to another room. When she turned around to yell at the person, she saw it was Raghav, and they were in his dance studio.
“Raqhav, what are you doing, everyone else is outside, and I was looking for—“
“Me?”
“In your dreams, Gamandi Rao.”
“By the way, I hired the best mehendi artist in Hyderabad for later, but I don’t think she will be able to fit all your amazing names for me, Gamandi, Badtameez, Duffer, Ziddi, Baby, Shona,” he traced a finger up her arm and stepped even closer to her, “Jaanu.”
Pallavi smiled sarcastically and turned around to leave, “If I put all of that on my hands it would be easy for you to find, and you’re not one to run away from a challenge are you?”
Raghav smiled and pulled her by her wrist close to him again, his breath heavy in her ear, “I haven’t forgotten the first challenge we set this morning, and I plan to win that too. And on that note, everyone put haldi on you, but you didn’t even ask me? Very rude.”
Pallavi pulled her wrist out of his hand and turned to face him, “there’s no ritual where the groom puts haldi on his bride.”
“Ah, but you forgot this wedding is happening Raghav Rao style,” and Raghav took some haldi off the back of his hands, and wiped some on her cheek. Slowly, smiling as her eyes looked into his with shock and then closed with pleasure. His touch sent a shiver down her back, her mouth went dry, her heart seemed to stop beating.
“Kya hua? Mujhe haldi nahi lagogi?” Raghav asked.
Pallavi grinned at him, she stood on her toes and moved her cheek to his, Raghav pulled her closer to him, his eyes closing, their faces barely a centimeter apart—and then—
“Here you go!” Pallavi laughed as she stepped back and wiped some haldi on his nose, and turned away starting to leave.
“Not fair, Pallavi!” Raghav made to pull her back when Baba stepped in the room, Pallavi’s smile didn’t falter, “Baba, what are you doing here, come on, let’s get back to the party.”
“Beta you go, I’ll be right there.”
Raghav’s eyes narrowed as Saanki Baap turned to him, glaring.
“What was going on here?” Baba asked as he noticed the fresh haldi on Raghav’s nose?
“That was between a husband and a wife, it doesn’t concern you.” Raghav said as he started to pass Baba to leave the room.
“Shut up, you two may be technically married, but you can never be her suhag. You don’t understand the meaning of the word husband, it means loyalty, trust, faith, support—“
“Like you did with your wife the day you kicked Pallavi out of the house?”
Baba stood silent, his fists clenched.
“Why do you look so angry…Baba?” Raghav smiled, “fine, consider my education in how to be a husband in “progress,” let me at least assure you I will not be taking any lessons from you, ok?” And with that, Raghav walked out of the room.

The mehndi started right after the haldi.
“We can’t waste time, we want the mehndi to dry before the sangeet don’t we?” Raghav announced to the room smiling at Pallavi, who was being seated next to Mansi in the center of the hall.
“In the meantime, I think we should definitely continue entertaining the two most beautiful brides in the city today, what do you think Raghav?” Nikhil added, putting his hand on Raghav’s shoulder.
“Of course, but Telugu music first.” Raghav added, winking at Pallavi, who rolled her eyes.
The henna artist moved to take off Pallavi’s bracelet, “no, you can’t take this off…I mean, let me just push it up my arm.” Pallavi added, making sure the henna artist didn’t think she was being a common bridezilla.
As she watched the artist cover her hands with the most beautiful henna design she had ever seen in her life, she thought about her first mehndi, that time her henna color had disappeared almost hours after her wedding, but looking at the artist hide Raghav’s name on her left ring finger, she knew, this time the color would be darker and it would stay longer. She was feeling guilty that she was feeling so happy at the thought of having a perfect wedding with a man that wasn’t Mandaar, but Mandaar would have wanted her to be happy, he wouldn’t have wanted her to spend her life depressed, running a small sari store in a white sari, with the world pitying her everywhere she went. Her identity wasn’t a widow, and after tomorrow, it never would be again.
Raghav looked at Pallavi worriedly, she seemed happy enough with her mehndi, but something seemed to be bothering her. Right then Baba came up to Pallavi, who was halfheartedly dancing with Keerthi and Mansi.
“Beta, are you okay?”
Raghav clenched his fists as he saw Saanki Baap approach Pallavi.
“Baba?” Pallavi said turning to her father, “yes, of course I’m fine, I’m just—“
“Thinking about Mandaar?” Baba added helpfully.
“How did you know?”
“Beta, not a day goes by that I don’t think about my son, and I would expect nothing else from his wife, regardless of where she is today,” he added.
Pallavi looked down guiltily, “Baba, I miss Mandaar every day too, but I know that if he were able to see me today, he would want me to be happy, he wouldn’t want me to spend my whole life lost in his memories.”
“You’re right Pallavi, but still, I wonder if Mandaar would think you’re making the right decision—“ Baba started to say, right then Raghav jumped in the conversation and said, “Are, what are you two doing here on the side of the celebration, aren’t we all here to celebrate Mansi and Rahul, come on let’s dance!”
Pallavi smiled at Raghav, and Baba walked away to join Milind Kaka in a huff.
“Raghav, what you did for Mansi and Rahul, I’ll never be able to forget it, thank you.”
“Didn’t you once say there are no thank yous in family? Am I not your family?” Raghav asked, grinning, no matter how much he loved Pallavi, he loved nothing more than riling her up.
Pallavi laughed, “fine, if I can’t thank you, then what will I do to show my appreciation?”
“Hmm, what can you do?” Raghav walked behind Pallavi and wrapped his arms around her.
“Raghav what are you doing, there are so many people here?” Pallavi tried to pull his arms off her waist, but she didn’t want to ruin her mehndi.
“Right now you were asking about what you could do to show your appreciation, and suddenly you don’t want to be appreciative? What happened?” Raghav grinned.
“Very funny, now let me go and have some sense as to where you are.” Pallavi said.
“No, I’m not going to let you go, not until I hear those three words and I win this challenge.” Raghav spinner her around by her waist and pulled her close.
Pallavi couldn’t even push him away because even if her anger was getting the best of her, she really loved the idea of her mehndi lasting for days after their wedding, “Raghav, you had told Amma and I that you had left your don like behavior behind, and now you’re trying to win a challenge unfairly, tsk tsk tsk.”
Raghav looked at her and smiled, “hmm, I guess you’re right, but mark my words, Raghav Rao does not like to lose.” He let her go and backed back onto the floor with everyone and continued dancing.
