So I watched Ajeeb Dastans and it's absolutely weird and wonderful. A dash of eclectic filmmaking and stellar cast combined will obviously give you good results.
An anthology of four different stories, the film is structured in four parts -- and each part is completely independent of each other.
Raw, visceral, wonderful and heart-wrenching, the stories are all about a journey into forbidden love, compromise, transgressions, and heartaches. The stories take the shape of the characters who are moulded into variations of different emotions, and each of them has a voluminous spark and something new to offer.
The first one was a little underwhelming despite Fatima's stupendous acting, but that's because of the forced twist in the end.
The second one is absolutely raw and gut-wrenching. You need to have an appetite for the grotesque to like this one.
The third one is my favourite, it deals with forbidden love and is heartbreaking in its sincerity.
The fourth one is emotional and will bring tears to your eyes.
The acting and I cannot emphasise this enough, is tremendous. It's one good show after the other. Each and every performance is shot through with sincerity, nuance, and that extra zing which makes it so tender and appealing. Every actor shines, and how! The surprise package is Nusrat. She's riveting! Fatima, Konkona, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Shefali Shah are all brilliant, as usual.
If you like films with sensibility and a dash of the unusual, this one's for you!
