you mean very fit like appropriate for hindi movies or very fit physically? Because he was neither. His 90s style comedy had died by then and his co-stars had moved on. Anytime actor loses his partners in crime there is drop in their work. As for very fit physically, he looked like a short bear compared to mid-late 2000s heroes. At that time everyone was trying to look like a fine specimen with their washboard abs. There was no space for fat people, scrawny people or bald people.

Fit in term of the genre that era belong to, what he did in 90's and became a super success akshey kumar started doing the same in 2000 with hera pheri etc , so he was fit for the genre of rom com movies ,,,,,but yeah lately he gained a lot of weight

Not lately, he was overweight for most of his famed career. In mid-late 2000s everyone became very look conscious. It was the time when the top actresses were all about looking hot and the men were all competing to get a 6 pack or 8 pack. SRK, Akshay, Saif, Aamir, Salman, Hrithik, John Abraham, Arjun Rampal, Shahid. Only person who barely survived the look competition was Sanjay but the credit for that entirely goes to Raju Hirani.

In my opinion Akshay did a lot of bad comedies during that phase but he did so many freaking movies that his chances of landing a hit was much higher. Not to mention a lot of things worked in Akshay's favor that would've been impossible for Govinda at that point. Mid to late 2000s Akshay was giving back to back hits with Katrina. They were known as a hit pair. He had a very famous pairing with Priyanka as well. If we are talking about rom-com genre then half of that is Rom. You can't romance if people were now sick of seeing unattractive men like Govinda romance Aishwarya.
