One day, when he came to invite my aunt for the birthday party of his five year old. The eldest son opened the door. 'You've another son? Oh. Which class? 12th? Ok.' From the next meeting, this neighbour began addressing her as aunty!

Like you said, amusing! I find all of it very amusing.

In the same lines that p4peppa mentioned the other day, the need to address people as uncle, aunty, bhaiyya, didi...like everything has it's pros and cons. Sometimes it helps in forging relations, bridging the gap between the two people, that sense of sister/brotherhood, belongingness, Indian culture for all that it is known; but more often than not it is enmeshed in preconceived notions. Age shaming, and all that. A woman with a kid, a married woman - auntie (also not to forget how it's sometimes used to mock a person) then a baldie or a man with grey hair - an uncle!

Having said all this, I will also add that since having grown up in an Indian environment, it also feels really rude/ weird to call an older person (in age/experience everything) just by their name.

When during an internship, a senior had asked me to just call by her name, no Ma'am, Didi, nothing, it had taken time to get used to that. After few months I was used to it obviously, ready to pass on the parampara, asking a junior not to call me Didi. 😆

It takes time to unlearn these deep rooted culture and it's teachings.

Also, the shayri you quoted, one of my favourites!

Thank you, GN! Ah that rite of passage from Didi to Aunty (and the accompanying biting of the tongue to stop the 'Aunty kissko bola re' 😆) I do agree with you that the relations it forges does override the negatives. It would be a pity to lose it altogether.

When you mentioned parampara, I'm totally visualising you in Amitabh's mode in K3G 😆

chapter 29

Lalan/Lily is a very interesting character. Will we see more of her?

An opportunity does come her way. Dadi better go through with her threat and shave her head if Kirti doesn't take it.

chapter 30

Nishit is looking out for his sister and he has valid concerns. Biplab wants to see her experience things without focusing on her limitations. Both are right in their own way, and Biplab did take care of one major issue by lifting her onto the bus.

Kirti can't make up her mind. She doesn't want Nishit to sit next to her, then takes offense when he doesn't. Conflicted much?

For some reason, I can't quote the chapter 🤔. It helps for reference 😀. This chapter reminded me of one of very few family trips we had. Main reason for not going: who will look after dada dadi ( nevermind 2 buajis who lived in the same city). It was a trip to Kullu Manali via Mandi or vice versa. Beautiful! We sisters decided that we are going to build a cabin somewhere on the mountains ( when we grow up) and fill it with books.

Our host uncle put a damper by telling that outsiders are not allowed to buy land there.

But we enjoyed a lot. One of the best memories of childhood.

I never had karanjis. I am going to try making them this week with the help of google baba. Health scares and horrors aside, the lockdowns have made chefs out of most.

Nishith's worry is understandable, but only upto a point and not justified in my opinion. I believe, Prasanna has had this condition for a long time now? And he is still so apprehensive about her moving around? In others company? That is not concern but control. Or may be it is concern. But instead of empowering her to enjoy independence, she is being made to toe the expected line and play the invalid martyr. ( I don't want to come across as fire breathing feminist but that is how I see it. There was a refrence of Prasanna being sexually frustrated and doing something about it. But what did Nishith do? He threw the guy out, fearing she is being expoilted by the guy).

Life doesn't stop for anyone. People get used to accidents, tragedies even death. Nishith and others are living their life, it is Peasanna, who is stuck in the chair. After the initial shock, it becomes a routine to see the person or may be dismiss them. Nishith hadn't done that, he worries. But nothing more.

Kirti finds it odd that Biplab wants to strike a relationship of sort with Prasanna. Quite normal reaction. Nobody wants an additional baggage. But there are people in this world who are willing to take the risk. May bevBiplab is one of them.

He he he, my shaiyri is all water under the bridge now. I don't mind the loss as it was all a competition for me. But I agree with you that urdu words are so beautiful. My daughter is a fan of Pakistani and Turkish dramas, even she has started liking urdu now. I am thinking of buying an urdu-english dictionary for her 😀.
