She began with such promise. And I've said this many times already but she deserved Best Debut that year, not Deepika.
(of course by now DP is galaxies ahead of her in terms of acting, but at the time!)
Sonam took the route of "I need to be a glamour puss" post her second film in which she was also great, Delhi-6.
Her 2011-2012 era was DISASTEROUS and so far she's only got one really good performance: Neerja. Sadly even post her awards for it, she has slipped back into missing the mark artistically.
But all is not lost. She has revolutionised Bollywood Fashion and deserves all the props for that. Who would've thought that this would be her standing after her initial first two films?
I really think she needs to do some sort of acting school training. She needs to go to a cave or mountain and introspect the hell out of her life, and believe in herself too. Maybe she'll surprise us all again and have a fantastic run of films in her 40s. 😃
I also think she deserved some of the awards for the best debut but alas her movie bombed while OSO was a blockbuster.
I think they gave the award to Deepika to signify she made more of an impact with OSO as it was a BB.
It was well over 3 years after her debut that Sonam tried her hand at glamorous flowerpot roles. I think she was insecure because she wasn't perceived as being a sexy siren while Deepika, Katrina, Priyanka, Anushka, Kareena, Bipasha were seen as hot and desirable.
She even said once "I don't have a body like Deepika or Bipasha"
Let's not forget that this insecurity was one of the reason the KWK incident happened. She said Ranbir wasn't sexy because he had said the same thing beforehand.
I digress lol.
But regarding her career. While I personally didn't like IHLS -I was shook by her acting after having seen her in Delhi 6 and Saawarya, it was her first hit and a Dharma movie. She played it safe and it paid off.
Aisha that she did the following year was a pet project that did moderately well. I don't know if it achieved cult status but it was the beginning of something as the two sisters then worked on Khoobsurat and VDW that were successful.
For me more than lack of talent, Sonam suffered by lack of luck. When she did Mausam, it was an ambitious project which went on to have a great first weekend. But the movie wasn't good and so it bombed.
The movies she did afterward worked quite well expect for Bewakoofiyaan -which was her first YRF but in which she didn't have much to, Dolly Ki Doli -I think it was a good movie, and The Zoya Factor (a well-deserved flop this one).
I think that Sonam managed quite well for someone who didn't act much opposite a Khan or a big A-lister (when she did Thank You with Akshay,he wasn't flop-proof).
Sonam did leave a mark in the industry thanks to her fashion sense but I think -hope- that her movies will also leave a mark. Be it her socially relevant movies or her women-centric rom-com.
She's wrapped up her next movie which is the remake of a Korean one. I hope it will work out. As a fan, I'm impatient to see her on screen again.
