The terrace door opened soundlessly, but the clinking of her bangles alerted him of her presence. As the wind rushed across, Purvi arranged herself on the terrace railing, standing just beside him. Vir's could feel himself stiffening, suddenly afraid of what she might say.
Did she ever think before saying anything? About how she has turned everything upside down with- with those three words?
"Ahem ahem! Mukhiji?" She cleared her voice, realising that he wasn't going to acknowledge her presence by himself.
"Hmm?" His worst fear, now she would confront him plain and sober, and he didn't have an answer.
"You are angry." She observed.
"Who said that?"
"I said, I am not blind..."
"Oh, never realised before!" He said sarcastically, trying to convince himself that she wouldn't see through the facade of this dilemma.
"Rude. Whatever. Ik what happened last night... I... I-"
"I what?!"
"I was drunk! Trust me Mukhi ji, it wasn't intentional... Why are you angry? What did I do?!"
"You did nothing...just silly stuff...you always do that..."
"I am NOT blind.... that's not what i did, otherwise you wouldn't be so angry with me. Or this upset."
"More so i am upset and angry with myself...not with you..." He mumbled, hoping that she didn't hear him.
"You will have to blurt it out one day you know that... you can't avoid me forever-
"-YOU SAID YOU LOVE ME !!" Vir said, unable to stop himself, unable to govern his words, blurting oit like she said. Because he knew that she wasn't lying, that he wouldn't, at any cost, be able to stay away from her.
"You said you love me....which... which isn't right. You know i love Sakshi, I can't give her place to anyone, I-"
"-And I don't remember ANYTHING Vir ji! NOTHING AT ALL! I was DRUNK! And- and actually leave it... it's useless saying anything to you!"
Purvi's frustration was also clear. And well, understandable also. All through the day Vir had been running away and hiding from her and everyone in college was giving her weird looks. She turned and left, muttering under her breath.
As soon as she banged the door, Vir's thoughts started flowing as if a dam was breaking.
Did he love her? Like actually? But how could he? He loves Sakshi and love happens once only... Kya karoon iss baawri ke liye main? Mar jaun!?
All these thoughts raced through his mind, only to be broken down by someone's footsteps. He turned to see the inspector coming towards him, some constables following him.
"What are you all doing here? What happened?"
"We- we are really sorry to inform you that we have to arrest you Mukhiya ji" the inspector said nervously.
"Are you out of your mind? What have I done?" Vir clenched his teeth, his voice soft and menacing and cold.
"You-you are arrested for abetment to suicide in priyashi's death case"
"Priyashi!? Dead? What! What the hell are you saying do you even realise that?!"
"Yes mukhi ji.. please come with us without resisting, we will show you the evidence. We found priyashi's half burnt body in the forest" The inspector extended an arrest warrant.
While the constable walked him out of the house, all vir could see was his baawri's face, angry at the police for false accusations and trying to stop him from going. Everyone could see how baffled she was, but Vir guessed only he could see the amount of hurt that flashed in her eyes, and not just for pri. She was about to break down but was acting strong, So sure that pri wasn't dead, so sure that vir wasn't the culprit.
"Mukhiyani ji, you should come to identify the body too Even though vaibhav ji has done that..." The inspector said.
"Ofcourse i will! If you can arrest my vir ji based on that bloody bast*d's statement, then i need to come woth you!" Her voice was rising, her eyes red with anger, hurt, tiredness and so many emotions that Vir wanted to leave everything and comfort her, tell her that he knew she cares about him and is being strong only for him.
As they reached the police station, Vir was locked up in a lonely, silent cell, all alone. And yeah, he would have to be alone with his thoughts now, his dilemma, his conflict between his heart and his brain, his feelings and his reasonings. No one could rescue him from these. He would have to answer them himself. He was least concerned about himself and his jailing. He knew that Purvi would bring hell and heaven together before he would spend two nights here.
Without her.
