I remember watching this movie as a kid and liking it immensely even back then. Yesterday I watched it on Youtube and was completely mesmerized. Mahesh Bhatt's best work till date, it is an incredibly sensitive and layered film about communal disharmony and political agendas. It's a social commentary on religious bigotry prevalent in society, and I believe especially now it is more relevant than ever.

Ajay Devgan is really, really good as the protagonist and Kunal Khemu as the child-artist and Pooja Bhatt as the mother are excellent too.

A genuinely heart-wrenching tale, it made me teary-eyed and left me wondering: why don't we talk about this gem more often?

Has anyone watched it?

Songs of this movie were so good, impactful and we remember them even today.. like Gali Mein Aaj Chaand Nikla and Raat Sari Bekaraari Mein ⭐️

Mahesh Bhatt has really lost his touch.. look at how Sadak 2 turned out in terms of storyline and music.

Loved it. An I usually don't like movies like this. But If Ajay Devgn is in them I can give it a chance

I love how Mahesh Bhatt uses his life story in a variety of permutations and combinations. I especially loved Kunal Khemu's performance as a child slowly realizing the significance of his parents' relationship. Watch Janam (1985) where Mahesh Bhatt shows the next stage of his protagonist as a young man. The father (this time played by Anupam Kher) is still alive. The young protagonist (Kumar Gaurav) loses his earlier hero worship and starts despising his father for making his mother suffer so much humiliation. It's also about his struggle to make his first film, falling in love with an orphan despite his parents' disapproval etc. The falling in love part is explored more in detail by Bhatt in Aashiqui (1990).
