Vasant Panchami marks the start of the spring season and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu Goddess of knowledge and wisdom. This festival also celebrates the blossoming of the mustard crop which is why many celebrate this occasion by wearing yellow outfits and offering yellow flowers during the puja. Yellow is also believed to be Goddess Saraswati's favourite colour, hence all decorations and attires associated with this festival are usually a shade of yellow.

This day is also significant for Vidhya Arambha, which involves families encouraging young children to write their first words and generally introducing them to education and learning. Many temples and educational institutions (schools, colleges etc.) hold special prayers known as Saraswati Puja on this day. Overall, the day is considered auspicious to embark on new journeys in life i.e. starting new work and/or getting married.

Goddess Saraswati

Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, also created Goddess Saraswati. It is believed she was born out of the mouth of Lord Brahma and thus became the Goddess of speech, music and knowledge. Saraswati is represented as a beautiful woman dressed in white sitting on a blossomed white lotus flower whilst holding a Veena. Her other three arms/hands are shown to hold a book, a rosary and a water pot, all symbolising the purity of various arts.
