"Special Squad May Return"
t began quite like Grey's Anatomy. Four medical interns and one big bad hospital. A few months into Dill Mill Gayye and it has turned into yet another soppy romance.
Pankitt Thakker who plays one of the interns, agrees. "It initially looked as if everyone would get equal importance. But eventually the principal characters got more scenes. That's what always happens in Star's soaps," he cribs.
But the actor is quick to add that he hasn't been sidelined yet. He also jokes about how the lead characters (Karan Singh and Shilpa Anand) keep crying all the time these days. To the forefront Thakker, best remembered for his blonde-streaked brat act in Special Squad, seems to play his cards well. He claims that his character wasn't supposed to be funny until he brought on the changes himself.
"I realised that Armaan and Riddhima had the author-backed roles. I had to do something to make sure I wouldn't fade away into the background," he explains.
What about Muskaan Mehani who is missing from the action? Thakker reveals that the actress wasn't happy with her role and wanted out. The creatives worked it out in such a way that she can make a re-entry whenever the script has something better to offer her.
Did he ever feel that way about his role in the show? "Arre mera toh usse bhi gaya guzra tha," laughs the actor. But he stayed on because he was allowed to incorporate changes and also he gets along well with his co-stars. Laughter to the rescue What about co-star Shilpa Anand faking an illness to go on a partying binge to Goa some months ago? Thakker laughs saying he did try to get in touch with his fellow medical intern. "But she didn't take my calls," he says.
Despite being around for a while, Thakker hasn't achieved the status of a 'star' yet. The actor, however, doesn't regret this.
When he moved to Mumbai a couple of years ago, he bagged the lead role in a daily soap. Soon after he got married and had to make sure he could provide for his family . Pick and choose "I'd pick any role if the money was good.. I was never choosy he says, adding that ," now that he has made big bucks, he can pick and choose. "Now I'd like to work towards becoming a star," he asserts.
Since he identifies so much more with his Special Squad character, is there any chance of the show returning to Star One? Thakker claims he has heard stories about a second season but isn't sure as yet.
