I think if you want to normalize then you need to show both sides. LGBT characters in series and movies are always shown in a good light and angels who know no wrong which I think is a bit too much

"Don't Like Staying In Shit": PC on leaving BW!
Out Now - Aari Aari Song - Dhurandhar
do we even have enough representation?? and Bollywood movies have shown transgender in negative light and stereotyped them except for Laxmi where again stereotypes were present and was borderline transphobic .. Bollywood had use lgbtqa+ ppl for comic relief .. there’s literally no real representation or they are shown as leads apart from two movies .. so they aren’t shown in negative light because we don’t have enough representation and the ones we have are being stereotyped ...
And if we talk about Hollywood then yes even there people are still fighting to normalise having lgbtqa+ characters and stop censoring their storylines .. but yes compared to Bollywood they definitely have more representation and even have grey and dark lgbtqa+ characters ..
BW has only three stereotypes for that
1. Comic relief
2. Opressed lovers
3. Psycho transgender villains
Nothing else.
You've got to be kidding me on this.😆
Over the years, we didn't even have LGBT characters on-screen, so not sure where you got the feeling that they were 'always shown in a good light'?
If you're talking about Laxmi, it was was a good attempt but the film is AT LEAST 10 years late. I still don't think it was transphobic in anyway. But unfortunately, the positive message that the film tried to deliver sort of faded because the film had so many 'other problems'.
Tamanna (1997) was a FAR BETTER film, but it didn't receive much accolades apart from critical acclaim. The fact that it was based on a real story makes it much much more special. But average Indian audience is not even aware of the film.
As far as homosexuality is concerned,
In the 90s, Fire created a lot of controversy despite it being a good attempt to show a lesbian relationship.🤔
Then in the next decade you had films like My Brother Nikhil but they do not even count because they were deemed "parallel cinema" like Fire, and their existence barely made any difference, because mainstream films like Dostana, Kal Ho Na Ho, Bodyguard etc etc etc hactually worsened the homophobia in our country. 🤢
Now tt will take at least 20 more Kapoor & Sons, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Aisa Laga OR web series like to compensate for the damage caused by above films.
Having characters just for "representation" doesn't make sense to me either. You've got to treat them as human beings, and not place these characters just to tick-off a few check boxes.
Eg. films/series like Super Deluxe, Mom, Sacred Games, Made In Heaven have authentic LGBT characters who are so much more than just representation and they not only leave a positive impact on you, they also contribute A LOT to the story.
The day we (as a society) start looking at LGBT community as human being, and not as caricatures or people with problems, then ONLY the real change will come.
Made in Heaven and Four More Shots did a great job of LGBTQ representation.
The best representation of gay guy was in War.
They didn't even tried to win brownie points on Khalid being gay. Now that is true representation.
Bollywood has 0 representation of Lgbt.
I saw glimpses of it in Made in Heaven but barring that very few movies and series have shown them in comparison with Hollywood.
