Why did Ileana's character in Barfi not follow her heart initially?

I always found it strange that Ileana's character Shruti in Barfi let go of Barfi even though she loved him and even when her mother was actively supporting her. All it would have taken was just one bold step to break off her engagement then and there. Irony is, she gave up her marriage later, which was a bigger step and that too, when he could no longer be hers.

She gave it all up when Barfi was already betrothed to Rimjhim, knowing fully well that her love would always go unfulfilled.

Discuss.

Wasn't her mother essentially telling her to pick the life with money and a socially acceptable match? And the second time, she already knew that life wasn't the life she wanted, so when she got a chance, she took it.

Money minded. Honestly speaking, most of us would do the same. :(

When her mother showed her the guy she loved but let go for a "better" guy who had a steady career and money, it made Ileana's character worry about her future. She started to think if she can have a steady life with Barfi.

It made sense because her own mother went through a similar situation and chose a different path and she's happy which is why Ileana's character chooses to follow her mother's advice.

But her mother was lying and she was never happy in her marriage and never forgot her true love. So, I think Ileana's decision made complete sense but the mother's advice was illogical given her own circumstances.

Her mother did not support her. 😵 and pretty much convinced her to NOT follow her heart, which she obviously regretted later.

Well her mother discouraged her to begin with.

If anything the movie was unrealistic as far as showing Shruti's journey goes. You don't love your husband then good leave him, but she spent the rest of her life single, regretting the one time she dumped barfi?🤔

Barfi had very little income and lived an unconventional and quirky life. For a regular girl like Shruti it would have been too much to give up everything about her old life and integrate herself into barfi's world.

Instead I think it would have been nice to see Shruti not listen to her parents and get herself a stable job to support herself and barfi and live in their own little house somewhere. It would have been interesting to see how the two strike a balance between the normal and the whimsical, and it would have given Shruti's character a bit more power. But that would have been another film.

Because marrying for love is stupid. You need money to survive in this world. Nobody wants to struggle in future. She should have adjusted with her husband and forgotten wasting her time thinking about Barfi.
