What determines how a child turns out to be? Is it genes or just the kind of environment he/she is brought up in? or a mix of both?

I'm talking mostly about the personality of a person. I have heard some people say that when you adopt a child, you don't know what kind of genes he or she has, so its hard to predict whether the person will turn out to be a thief or a normal person. Do genes actually determine what kind of a person a child would be or is it all upbringing?

How about children who turn out to be totally different than their parents?

Is most of the personality of the child shaped in the first 5 years of life (I've read this in many articles) or is a child born with some personality traits?

in a nutshell - both nature and nurture.

btw, what ensures a good quality tree......soil or seed?...or seed+soil+regular care??? the regular care in case of a tree would be akin to spirituality for humans. so, i would say nature, nurture and spirituality defines our personality.

will add more later.

It's a mixture of the two....nature and nurture.

It's said that the first 6 years of your life shape you as a person, in regards to your position in the family, how your parents treat you etc

Quite a coincidence that you started this topic, as im currently reading about it! For further reading check out 'They F*** You Up: How to survive family life' by Oliver James.

Love the title of this book....must read it because the title seems spot on!

First six years, huh.......my son (6) still rides on me back and treats me like either a dog or a horse dpending on his mood............

what have I got to look forward to in the future, if my son thinks I'm a dog!!!

Right!

If I made him, I can bloody well MAKE his personality too! Easy!

when we say "nurture", we mean all the environment they r exposed to at home, in school, with friends...everything including what they see on tv and read in newspapers. who knows what clicked with them where? lot of these influences r going to be different than what their parents were exposed to. plus we all r born with some unique traits as well that result from the mixing of all the dna we inherit from our parents that they have inherited from their parents who, in turn, have inherited from their parents...........get the picture!!! a child's dna is not a perfect replica of what the parents have. it's a mix of what dominant/recessive traits that he received from both parents. the child is also not growing up in the exact same environment as their parents did.

all this leads to some unique traits which, along with the kind of environment one grew up in, manifest themselves in a personality that is unique to that individual. a lot also boils down to personal choices each one of us make.

Mostly its upbringing.and the kind of exposure one has... but sometimes it can be genes of psychopathology in action as well...😊

the biology you're born with. also the family, teachers, your circumstances, your experiences, trials and tribulations of your life, what you eat, how much you eat, the gals at the gym who enhance your confidence when they drool over u, success and failures, environment in general. also the guys u hang out with. best way to lose one's inhibitions and become fast and loose, for example, is to take a fancy for some guys. folks wont recognize your personality when it's all done πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜†

It is both genetic as well as environment which affect some one's personality.

There are certain predicitibilities about the future of a child , but some times you see surprises.

Some people despite getting every good thing by birth and by environement turn out to be biggest jerks .
