My neighbors back when I lived in SF were an old couple that had lived there since early 60s. They had so many stories!

The tech boost at SF really knocked majority of working and middle class families, and the high rents pushed out anyone that couldn't afford it. People were getting thrown out of their houses, and apartments. And this created a huge homeless problem (COVID is going to do the same). The liberal government did nothing to stop the rent hikes, instead they invited rich Chinese and Russians to buy up real estate. SF is still a great a city, but tech bros and foreign rich people ruined it completely.

I'm still in SF, just stuck working from home.😆 From my experience, the rent wasn't that bad up till 2010-2012. Then everything went out of control exponentially. Like you said, it could be the tech startups and the silicon valley folks wanting to live in SF. One of my friends got outbid for a house worth a couple million dollars cuz a chinese family from overseas was willing to pay all that cash up front. That happens on a regular basis. God knows where they get all that money from.
