Its easy to make people laugh. Anything goes. You watch a movie and wonder, this is a joke? But people are laughing. Comedy has no stature, but still, its something the whole family could watch. There would be no double entendres, for instance. Double entendres are boring. Someone is coming through the door. Ha ha. You can write it with your left hand.
And I was also clear that Sarabhai vs Sarabhai would not poke fun at anyone. So the humour comes from the characters themselves and their relationships with each other. The key is in the characterisation, the setting and the simplicity of the pot.
We shot only 70 episodes, but Sarabhai vs Sarabhai hasn't been off TV since it started. I don't know how I kept this show going. All I can say is that the characters were inspired from my family and friends. I internalised their behaviour, painted them over and used them. But the main thing was to stick with the theme. The conflict between Sarabhai and Sarabhai.
