This chapter had me on on the edge of my seat! My heart was beating along with Suman's! Amazingly written! The suspense factor on both personal and professional levels is entwined into the story so well👍🏼 Apologies for saying the same things yet again but I can't seem to rest my marveling at your style of writing and detailing👏

Chap 17-Clearing skies

As Shravan drove off, he could not help but take sneak peeks at Suman as he kept his eyes on the heavy traffic on the road. He noticed that Suman had become a little pale and probably had lost a little weight and for a fraction of a second he thought maybe he was the reason. Suman felt Shravan was looking more handsome than before, his clean-shaven look and his hair was gelled to perfection, his bobbing Adam’s apple, maybe she never noted this earlier. Suman too kept stealing glances at him looking for the right moment to start a conversation.She decided to start with a sorry when Shravan turned towards her and said “Suman there is something important I need to tell you. Saira and Mushtaq were in touch post we raided the motel, u remember where Manju used to work. Saira did provide Mushtaq with some information on the new places where they were clearing bushes for cultivation of opium, most probably with an eye to supplying them to the Maoist belt. Last night Saira was kidnapped”. Suman gasped hearing that “What? How? When?”. Shravan revealed that initially Mushtaq thought it was her customer who picked her up but when she did not return in the morning , he went hunting for her and called him saying Saira might have been kidnapped so Shravan wanted to make a detour and meet Mushtaq before they turn and head towards Karwar. Suman instantly agreed as she had admired this girl Saira in the short connects that she had with her.

Suvan met Mushtaq mid-way and he confirmed that one of the brothel girls had seen Saira being forcibly dragged into a small van and she could see more than one man inside. If they would have been customer, they would have bargained with her for servicing multiple customers together and knowing Saira, she would not have agreed. Even if they would have picked up Saira she should be back by now as its almost time for breakfast and rest before they all gear up for the night to service customers. She has been out with a customer many times but comes back by daybreak. Shravan had already informed one of his friend Rajan, under whose jurisdiction the area falls, to look for Saira and sent her photograph. With this new information he called up Rajan again, but Shravan was a little disappointed as Rajan did not seem to be bothered. Looking at his fraught face Suman wanted to know if he wanted to stay back or he wanted her to stay back to look for Saira. Shravan thought a little and said “No Suman, if Sash wants us to go it must be really important and if I am thinking what it is then Saira must have been kidnapped because she was helping us in the case and its then more important for us to continue this journey because probably we are in the right track and the cartel is worried. That’s just a guess but there could be other reasons, but we will try staying updated and let the local police do their job”. Suman’s heart went out to Saira and she asked Shravan if he was sure and Shravan finally smiled at her and said “Yes, Suman let’s go. I know you are worried about her but she is a brave girl , she will manage and anyways police will be looking for her”. With Mushtaq to keep an eye for Saira, Suvan finally started on their journey to Karwar, a long 10 hour drive along meandering national highways, thick forests, along the western ghats covered with lush green foliage. Shravan was quite accustomed with the route, so he knew his way through villages, farmlands and arecanut trees as they drove ahead at quite a fast pace. They stopped for some quick packed food and continued driving by taking turns at the wheels. Shravan wanted to take a different route via Shimoga so he could show Suman the beautiful and ravenous , Jog Falls as it tumbles down displaying the majestic Shravathi river is on a freefall here.

Suman was surprised by Shravan’s plan but she was still happy that he had decided to do the detour for her and things were starting to get back to normal between them without a sorry yet. During the journey Shravan had tried reaching out to Rajan or his counterparts to get some news about Saira but it had been a futile effort and with each passing hour he had been frustrated. Suman had asked if they should skip going to Jog falls but Shravan had declined as he wanted nothing to come between him and Suman and he would not change plans for anybody. He had been through a harrowing experience and he felt at peace now with Suman by his side and he was determined to have a quite time with her before they delved into the next chapter of their mission. They had finally managed to reach the roaring Jog falls and Shravan had pulled Suman to the nearest point where they got mesmerized by the falling cascade of water from the alluring heights. Suman stood in a daze as she soaked in the beauty and strength with which the falls swayed its way through the rocky mountains.Shravan eyes stung a little looking at Suman’s beautiful face as he recollected how he had missed her in Rajasthan. As the water gushed down and sudden bouts of wind blew Suvan were sprayed with a sudden misty spray of water lightly drenching them and Suman in a reflex turned and hid herself in Shravan’s chest. Shravan’s throat constricted at the closeness as his strong arms went around Suman holding her in place. Suman looked up to see the small water droplets stuck to Shravan’s hair and some of them gliding down his taut cheekbones and as if on cue her palm went up to brush them away. As she touched his face Shravan closed his eyes feeling her soft palms touching his rough skin and a throbbing started somewhere down below. Her palms rested there for a few seconds and as Shravan opened his eyes he saw a teary eyed Suman with her big doe shaped eyes looking back at him. She kept looking at him as her eyes spoke volumes about the tryst of emotions she felt at this moment before she said “Shravan I am sorry” in a wobbly voice and immediately Shravan’s fingers touched her lips stopping her from saying further as nodded his head to stop.He pulled Suman further into himself as he rested his chin on Suman’s forehead and just stood there basking in their newfound closeness and belonging as the little drizzles of cold water continued drenching them from head to toe.

Shravan did not want to let the moment end but Suman managed to finally drag him because they were getting late. As they made their way back to continue the journey further in their car, Shravan’s phone rang and Suman saw that he was little irritated seeing the display on the screen and she figured out that Shravan did not like the person who was at the other side. Then she heard Shravan say “But Devika she was helping us; how can you say like this about her. Just because she is in a profession not by choice you cannot demean her. Don’t you consider her as a human , would you have done the same thing is a powerful corporate honcho would have got lost”. There was some conversation post that and Shravan shouted out “bloody Bi$#h” and he threw his phone as it hit the dashboard and fell apart. Suman looked agape as Shravan walked out of the car slamming the wheel and closing the door shut with a bang. Thankfully he had not gone very far and Suman could see he was standing against a large tree overlooking the falls. She slowly walked towards him with unsure steps not knowing how he would react. She stood a few feet away observing Shravan looking away from her and trying to control his anger. Suman saw him folding his fingers into a fist and before he could slam against the tree Suman stepped forward and held his arm. Slowly she felt him relaxing in her hold and finally he opened his fist to interlace with Suman’s fingers while his breathing eased. It was quite a while and for a moment Suman thought he would not say anything when Shravan turned sideways and with a sombre look on his face said, “Sorry about not minding my language”.Suman smiled a little and said “its ok” as she deliberated a little before encasing Shravan’s hand in both her palms.

Suman softly said “Shravan do you want to talk about ….err…Devika, I mean”. Suman left the sentence hanging and Shravan realized that he is yet to come clean regarding Devika. It was going to be a long journey towards his truth but for now it was important to put Suman’s confusions at rest so he softly said “Devika is not my girlfriend , all that is just a farce”. Suman looked at him shocked as Shravan looked straight at her and said “You deserve to know everything about me and today I will not hold anything back”. He stood with his back pressing against the tree as he pulled Suman across to make her stand next to him Shravan continued “My story does not start with Devika but with my father Devraj Malhotra. He was a very handsome young man who worked in a small firm in Haryana. He was a simple man with high ambitions of making it big some day. The firm owner was growing old and wanted someone to take care of his business as he had only a daughter who was barely educated village girl and not beautiful.Inspite of having a lot of land and money he was unable to find a suitable boy for his daughter and then his eyes landed on my father. He had seen the hardworking simple yet handsome man for a long time and he finally placed his bets.My father fuelled by his ambitions saw this as an opportunity and married my mother Kavitha Malhotra. Few years later I was born, and my father’s life started revolving around me. His love for me and his ambitions both soared. My grandfather had passed away soon after I was born and with all the wealth that he had passed on to my father he setup his own small business which was growing comfortably with each passing year. As I grew, I was moved to one of the bestschools in the city and I loved it and I knew it was because of my father and I absolutely adored him, and he was my hero. I was in secondary school when some gossips surfaced that my father was having another lady in his life with whom he was going around. Initially I did not accept but one day I saw him with my own eyes, coming out of a hotel with Maria, his secretary in his arms. I came home and questioned my mother and then it dawned on me that she already knew.
