Hmm when it comes to dark and depressing, the only movie that made me massively contemplate life was the South Korean movie Oldboy. It was on my mind for a whole week. Damn that movie!
But if y'all really want some depressing shit, there are movies like- Matroobhoomi, Sophie's choice, Irreversible, Boy in striped pajamas, Requiem for a dream, the killing fields. Goddam these movies!
I have watched Matrubhoomi -Damn I couldn't sleep that night when I watched it, after that I had to watch some episodes of Friends to counter that. Damn what a disturbing movie!! But message of the movie was good.
Udaan: One of the best movies made about abuse. Depressing yet well taken. Ronit Roy excelled so did the two kids.
Mili: old classic of Big B and Jaya Bhaduri . Depressing yet beautifully done.
article 15, badlapur, udta punjab, haider , andhadhun, udaan

Nice post Minty!
I was about to make a similar post because I happened to watch Matrubhoomi - A Nation Without Women yesterday. (I am into a lot of off-beat hindi films these days, that I always avoided as a kid)
Set in a dystopian India, it has to be one of the most depressing, dark, heart-breaking and brutal Hindi films I've ever watched.
I had known about this film since years, but finally got the courage to watch it last night. There's a lot of violence in the film including sexual violence, but thankfully it wasn't graphic otherwise I would've probably fainted.
Other dark and heart-breaking films are Chandni Bar, Bandit Queen, NH10 etc.
I am planning to watch Deepa Mehta's elements trilogy soon (Fire, Water, Earth). Heard they're good too.
I thought of watching article 15. Then I watched the trailer and gave up. Can't watch dark movies.
Also tried to watch chhapak and gave up. It was too depressing for me.
Grave of the fireflies
Hachi A Dog's Tale
These films literally crushed my soul.
In Bollywood I'd mention Ghayal and Anand. The latter isn't dark but the physical degradation, the helplessness, and the death of the titular character depresses you. 💔
For me dark and depressing don't necessarily go together. Lootera was depressing but not dark. Badlapur and Article 15 were dark but did not leave me depressed. Probably because there was a tiny hint of things perhaps becoming better at the end. In that vein I'd recommend Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Parinda (Jackie Shroff,Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar) in the dark but not depressing category.Despite all the murder and mayhem it had one of the brothers surviving and given a second chance.Rare in a gangster flick.Gulzar's Mere Apne and Lekin were definitely in the depressing but not dark category.
