Talent always has takers Monday, November 07, 2005
The Indian Television Academy Awards takes place tonight. While founder Anu Ranjan says, "It will take the TV industry to a global level," we quiz jury chief Raveena Tandon on how she chose the best saas-bahus

That made you take the position of chairperson of the Indian Television Academy Awards?
Well, it is a very serious affair. It is a performance-based award, unlike many others. To me, it makes complete sense to head the jury of such a prestigious venture. If it was just another popular award, I would have definitely declined.
What kind of talent are you looking for?
Well, we seek to felicitate actors who do complete justice to their performance. Honestly, I have not seen anything so far but have total faith in the jury. As the chairperson, it is my role to oversee the smooth progress of proceedings. My direct intervention is required only if there is a tie or a dispute.
Considering that all TV shows look the same, isn't it difficult to judge a single winner?
I completely disagree with this. I think great individual performances always stand out. For example, I won multiple awards for my film Aks but for many others that were touted to be different, I did not get any acclaim despite doing big roles. I feel that no matter how miniscule, a good performance gets noticed.
TV is a vast medium. Don't you think it is unfair to see so many shows at one go to shortlist the nominees?
It is true that work goes on rather quickly. But our jury members are TV industry stalwarts and are well acquainted with its ways. I am confident that they will be able to separate the grain from chaff.
How do you explain the Jassi director not being nominated when the show has nominations in almost every other category?
Maybe they did not fill in their forms on time or they had some problem at their end. Even for my show Sahib, Bibi aur Ghulam, a lot of actors were nominated but I was left out as I had issues with my producer, who in turn did not send my name in.
Do you watch TV?
Of course. My favourite comedy show is Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. I am a complete Satish Shah fan. I even like Nach Baliye a lot. Another show that I loved to watch was Indian Idol. I used to get emotional and cry when my favourite contestants would be eliminated.
Who will you cheer the loudest for today?
Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it to the awards as my baby daughter is unwell. From my side, I would like to wish everybody luck.
