Awesome update, Sam! I absolutely loved the conversation between Saheb and Suman...I like how he made her understand and how you drew the parallels between investigation and relationships. I also liked how you weaved in Nirma's backstory and subtly mentioned social issues, like lavy also mentioned. I hope Shravan is okay 😲 he's missing!! I hope is found ok and then clears up his issues with Suman. Waiting for the next update

Chap 16 Realization

Suman felt as if air has been sucked out of her system. She managed to hold a chair and sit down as her hands and feet trembled imagining the worst. She called Saheb and got the complete picture of what had happened and when but she could feel all the while her feet and hands getting clammy. She had to act fast and think on her feet as she joined Sash and Subbu to understand the details.She expressed her interest to assist them as she wanted to stay abreast with the information. She kept saying to herself “Shravan is smart , he will manage,maybe he lost his way, maybe he is still there somewhere. He has been in worse situations during his stint in Greyhounds , this is nothing. Saheb did not see him caught so there is a high chance he might have escaped. Don’t break Suman,you have to find him, you do not have a choice”. Every time she counselled her mind and heart the more she realized how slim were the chances of Shravan being fine and with every passing minute it became more slimmer. She called up her contacts in Rajasthan police, the local NCB and her informer network for contacts in Rajasthan. Calls everywhere, searches in full swing but no trace of Shravan till evening. Subbu and Sash had already got on the job even at the risk of revealing the details of the target and the investigation to involve Rajasthan NCB, Police officials at the highest level. Subbu knew someone in the Rajasthan Crime Branch who was his old buddy , and appealed to him to get things moving on warfooting. It was now more than 24hrs that they were unable to find a trace of Shravan. The police were already searching for his body in the canals nearby and Suman was drowning in a sea of despair.

Nobody had slept a wink at night, and everybody was on the phone as Suman and Sash were planning to fly out to Jaipur in the next flight. It was 1 am when everyone in Bangalore office had dozed off on their chairs apart from Suman, Sash and Subbu who were still trying to see if there could be something they were missing,some signal, some message. Shravan’s phone has been switched off for more than a day now. Sash had insisted for Suman to eat and rest but Suman knew that she will not be able to eat a mouthful today and the sight of food was making bile riseup in her throat. She saw that Sash had fallen in a slumber and she moved away from them to the wall, panelled from ceiling to the floor in tinted glass. She could get a clear view of the clear skies above with the stars twinkling away brightly as the moon seemed to be lovingly spreading its brightness amongst the stars. Suman reminiscences a night not so long ago when she had been in Shravan’s warm embrace as she had talked about Satya and the tears of desperation slowly made their way down her cheeks as she slowly held the glasspanes and gave in to the sobs. She gradually looked up to the stars with her vision still clouded with the remaining tears and as one of the stars brightly twinkled she cried out to Satya and pleaded with him to keep Shravan safe. All she wanted was just one chance to make things right between them, see him smile once more. It was almost time for them to start for the airport and Suman decided to once more try to speak to Saheb before they left. The phone rang quite a few times before it stopped ringing, she tried again but still the same and then the third time when it was picked up and Suman frustrated and angry started “Saheb, what are you doing? How can you be so irresponsible, don’t give up I tell you nothing has happened to Shravan, he is fine, I am coming and till I reach search for him. No canals, search for him please not his body” and she broke down in sobs and then she heard, it was HIM with a soft “Suman…I am fine and back Suman”. She was not sure if she was hallucinating or it was reallyShravan so she spoke to herself “Suman you are imagining …no Suman be strong..you will have to find Shravan” and then she heard again “Suman , Saheb has gone to speak to the doctor. I came an hour back”. She looked up at the skies and the brightly twinkling star and mouthed a Thank You before proceeding towards the control room of sorts.

The news had already reached the control room and people were hugging each other with relief written on their faces. Saheb was on the call explaining how Shravan had managed to get away from the thugs and hid himself in a sewerage outlet of the factory. Thankfully the factory was not in a running condition so only limited effluents were being discharged from it and Shravan had sat there in the muck and sewerage to save himself as he knew if they once see him they would kill him. He had witnessed the horrific way they had killed Nimra so despite the atrocious smell and muck he managed to save himself and the proofs. His phone is damaged, but he had managed to send the evidences before that. He had inhaled a lot of toxic gas in the sewerage and the dirty water had run over his body for almost a whole of 12-13 hours before he could extricate himself from there and swim across a narrow river where the sewerage emptied to his safety in the darkness. It was a miracle that he managed to survive and escape but for now the evidences and Shravan were safe. They were in the hospital as they were doing some checkups to ensure he is fine. Shravan on the other hand wanted to speak to Suman as soon as possible. During the last 24hours when he had cheated death he had only thing in mind and had prayed to God to give one chance to meet Suman and from the cries of agony that he heard from Suman in the call a little while ago he was sure she was feeling the same too. He was now hopeful that things will be fine between them once they speak to each other. Suman walked outside to the moonlight park to her favourite haunt and cried her heart out. She had felt her life being numbed when Shravan was missing. She was getting scared of the surge of emotions she was feeling for this man who was her life, her breath and her being now. She did not know what Devika meant to Shravan but the fact was that she had fallen unconditionally and irrevocably in love with Shravan and it does hurt if he doesn’t reciprocate but for her the truth remains and she will continue to love him unconditionally.

Suman had come back home at the wee hours of the morning and had slept like a log after along time tired, exhausted yet happy. It was already past 8:00 am when she managed to slightly open her eyes and check her phone when she saw two missed calls from Saheb. She lunged out of the bed and called back and as soon as the call got picked up she started “What happened Saheb, is Shravan ok ?”. Then she heard that laugh that she had waited to hear for the last couple of weeks and soaked up all of that. Hearing no answer Shravan asked “Suman r u there, Saheb just gave me his phone to keep with me so I called you”. Suman smiled and said“Its ok and I am sorry, I just am a little worried I guess”. Shravan teased “Worried about me?”. Suman was happy seeing his teasing back which seemed to be like after ages. She smiled into the phone nodding a yes when Shravan said again “You remember right I cannot see you, I can only hear you”. Suman broke into an effortless laughter hearing that and Shravan had his heart beating loudly at the sound of her laugh, how much he missed her. Finally recollecting why, he had called her Shravan said “I will return tomorrow late evening or night. We must stay one more day here to finish all formalities and I will see you the day you leave for Karwar. I know we have lots to talk but I will wait for you to be back and I will get a new phone and speak to you soon. Don’tworry I will not get into trouble and I will take care of myself. I promise”.

Suman fell back on the bed smiling after a long time and why not, they were having a sane conversation in weeks and it was full of warmth that used be.Suman was sad that she could not meet Shravan before leaving for Karwar but she knew her job demanded and that would have to take precedence over what Shravan and Suman wanted. Next day they had made some discoveries in the case where they had figured out the Target A was at a point of time an employee of a hospitality M&M hospitalities. M&M hospitalities has a lot of stakeholders although not public listed. A closer look reveals that the investment by these people is fishy as they all have grants to them through the same firm in Dubai which funds the NGO in Dubai. It’s a long chain of possibilities, evidences and connections which needs to be cracked. Aneesh had done a wonderful job of tracing them out given the challenges of uncovering such covert transactions.He would be getting additional support from DRI and ED for delving further into these and will be collecting evidences and further trace the financial trail.They also have cracked some communication which provides pointer to what these postcodes and the city mean. Most probably they were or are being used as indicators to the kind of contraband that was arriving and what grade like opium, heroine or hashish and the postal codes were a number to identify the grade of the consignment.

Suman had waited for Shravan’s call that night but unfortunately, he hadn’t called, and Suman thought he might have not had got Saheb’s phone to call. The next morning Suman had been yet more sad thinking that she was about to leave for Karwar and she has not been able to speak to Shravan. Grudging and fretting she got ready and unwillingly ate the parathas that her maid Aarti Akka had served. As she quietly sipped the orange juice lost in thoughts of Shravan she heard the loud honk of the car outside and she realized it was time to leave. She stepped out without looking up instructing Aarti when she will be back and she should lock the door when somebody said “Yes, Suman fears bugs so lock the door properly “.Suman jumped around at the voice to see the killer smile on Shravan’s face staring back at her. She felt butterflies in her stomach as she drank in the appearance of the man infront of her looking handsome as ever. She walked forward with a skip in her step as she kept smiling ear to ear when Shravan said “If you keep looking at me like this I am going to burn” and to his satisfaction the pink hue rose up Suman’s cheeks as she looked away feeling shy and Shravan’s eyes almost misted thinking how much he had missed this. He opened the door of the car asking her to step in when she asked, “Where are we going Shravan, Sash will soon arrive to pick me up”. Shravan laughed a little and said “I and you, super cop are going to Karwar and not Sash. He had some family emergency so last evening he called me up asking to come back in an earlier flight. He was not sure he should be sending me given the Rajasthan backdrop, but I assured him that I was fine to go”. Suman was now smiling like a kid and then she hit Shravan softly on his shoulder and said“You came yesterday and you are coming here today and I can see you have got a new phone but you did not call me”. Shravan said “If I would have called you how would I have seen the happiness on your face like this”. Suman blushed again and quietly sat inside Shravan’s car as he kept smiling walking to the other side to take to the wheels.
