what if parents want to travel the world, be their own independent self after fulfilling all their responsibilities but are unable to do so coz they have to take care of grandchildren or be at their children's home for other reasons.

Then they should feel free to do that. That's what our scriptures talk about anyway-- Going on Vanaprastha when you're in your golden years and done with all responsibilities.
True 'independence' isn't about living alone. It is about
#1 being clear about the person you are & what you stand for, without the influence of others
#2 being financially able to support yourself
Also, I don't think independence and freedom are the same thing. We can be independent, but very few years are free.
Freedom requires detachment from the world, and humans keep saying we want to be free yet constantly look at things / people to bind them, like relationships/internet/food etc

That's different. Taking responsibility for your old folks.
Living in yiur parents' home almost invariably means less independence.

Well they kind of start taking responsibility and bring home the money. And they look after parents, their family if they have any, finance, loan repayments etc. That to me is every aspect of being adult really.. It's just part of our unique rich culture. Also alot of parents now aren't controlling like they used to. The only thing they wont let you do is bring home random girls, smoke, consume alcohol etc which is a good thing tbh.. Other than that boys got lot of freedom like stay out at night, have friends over, go for parties etc
Sadly girls still got lot of restrictions and given how unsafe and danger that country is for girls, its quite understandable.

Those parents are control freaks. Or, in very few cases, genuinely very old and disabled that they cannot do things by themselves alone.

Why do you need to stay with parents to look after them? You can still be a responsible and caring child without sacrificing your independence.
And placing restrictions on girls is not the answer to battling sex crimes.
Its both economical and cultural thing.
India is a poor country, with huge population and very high realty cost. Not easy for every one to own a house. So if the parents own a house the children even when they are grown up live with the parents cos a) dont have to buy or rent a house b) they can take of their aging parents as when they were young their parents took care of them.
