Part 4
Mrityunjay was restless in his office pondering what Tara might be thinking about him. He was still waiting for her response when the notification of an upcoming meeting popped up. He was unsure how he was going to face her because she was going to be present in the same damn meeting! Seeing no option to skip this face-off, he proceeded to the meeting.
Tara was already sitting in the conference room looking as beautiful as ever. He was surprised when his mind complimented her beauty. It was not that she was ugly, but the notion that she was beautiful never occurred to him. Blame his confused mind for this! Everyone was already seated and the chair next to Tara was the only one empty. It was his usual place, always next to her, on her right side. But today it seemed quite threatening.
He sat quietly in his chair and Tara straightened in hers sensing him sitting next to her.
During the meeting, she tried not to look to her right. Mrityunjay was also trying not to look at his left side. The one-hour meeting seemed to be taking forever to finish for both of them.
When the meeting finished, Tara did not rush to leave the meeting room, as to reach the door she had to pass by Mrityunjay. Mrityunjay also waited there considering it as a chance to speak with her. When they were alone in the conference room, he glanced at her and found her already staring at him. She smiled and stated, “I agree we should talk.”
Mrityunjay sighed seeing her smiling. He had never felt so relieved seeing her smiling like he felt today. “Should we talk here or go somewhere else? Anywhere you prefer,” he gushed.
She smiled and replied, “Let’s get out of here and get some coffee.”
They took his car to reach the destination. The whole ride was filled with earsplitting silence.
After reaching their favourite café, they ordered their usual coffee and sat at their favourite table which was in the middle of the cafe. Mrityunjay and Tara were across each other. Tara tried to look to her right and saw a couple kissing and her eyes widened as big as saucers! Immediately heat crawled to her face as she remembered her encounter with Mrityunjay the day before. She turned to her left where another couple was sitting, their fingers laced. She cursed herself inwardly for suggesting this place for the talk!
Mrityunjay coughed to get Tara’s attention. When she looked at him, he gave her a warm smile. Tara returned a smile of her own.
“Tara, I…” he groaned because of the loss of words.
“Mrityunjay, we both are in the same boat,” she said fidgeting with her fingers. Talking to Mrityunjay was stress relieving, never a cause of stress!
“Tara, I gave some thought to what our parents said yesterday and I think we can give it a chance, only if you are comfortable with it. If you don’t want to go in that direction, then we can continue to be friends. I am happy with whatever you decide,” he said, looking in her eyes.
By this time their coffee arrived. Both sipped on their coffee in silence, happy to avoid answering.
When the coffee was over, Tara spoke. “I understand what they are trying to do, but I am not ready for it. Not yet,” she said, looking anywhere but at Mrityunjay.
“I am not sure as well. But then I will never be ready. So Tara, if and only if you are comfortable, we will go in that direction,” he said watching her.
“Ok,” she said still avoiding any eye contact with him.
“Ok? What should I understand by that?” he questioned, lifting his eyebrows.
“I mean, I am ok with what our parents think,” she muttered. Seeing his confused expression, she rolled her eyes and explained, “I mean we can give it a chance.”
There was silence. She had expected Mrityunjay to say something but he had not said a word. So when she sneaked a look at him, she found him smiling like an idiot.
He placed his hand on hers which was on the table, squeezed it a little and said, “Thank you, Tara.”
He was about to say something when both of their phones buzzed with the notification of the upcoming meeting. Both looked at each other and laughed, seeing this as a cue to get back to the office.
They were leaving the cafe when suddenly Mrityunjay was pushed towards Tara by a group of people. To prevent herself from falling, Tara grabbed Mrityunjay’s arms tightly and her eyes closed to brace the impact of falling. But she found herself still in her spot. She opened her eyes and found Mrityunjay smiling at her and then she realized she was being held in his arms. An unknown tingling sensation ran through her spine. She immediately straightened herself and walked out of the cafe. Mrityunjay followed her.
When they were in the car, it was again the same deafening silence but now the burden on their hearts was less. He switched on the radio and it was playing “You and Me”.
~You and me were always with each other~
He smiled listening but did not turn to look at Tara and concentrated on the road in front of him.
~Before we knew the other was ever there~
Tara smiled remembering all her school and college days when Mrityunjay was always there with her.
~You and me, we belong together~
On this line, both sneaked a glance at each other through the corner of their eyes.
~Just like a breath needs the air~
Mrityunjay turned slightly to look at her. Tara could feel the heat rising in her cheeks. It was something new she was feeling today when he was looking at her.
~I told you if you called I would come runnin'~
Tara raised her eyes to look at him and found him smiling.
~Across the highs, the lows and the in-betweens~
Listening to this, he took her right hand in his and squeezed it lightly in promise. He had always come when she had called him, but today it felt different to think he would come for her.
~You and me, we've got two minds that think as one~
It was very much true for them. They knew what the other was thinking.
~And our hearts march to the same beat~
Mrityunjay raised her hand to his lips and gave a peck on her knuckles making her heart flutter on a different rhythm.
~They say everything, it happens for a reason~
To change the gear, he released her hand and Tara felt the loss of warmth around her hand and smiled, thinking it felt good when he held her hand. May be marrying him would not be that bad.
~You can be flawed enough, but perfect for a person~
Yes, he had some flaws but neither was she flawless.
~Someone who will be there for you when you fall apart~
He remembered when she had come like a knight in shining armour to rescue him whenever he was in doubt.
~Guiding your direction when you're riding through the dark~
They looked at each other and gave a warm smile.
~Oh that's you and me~
They chuckled a little listening to this.
~You and me, we're searching for the same light~
They looked at each other again this time holding their gaze a little longer.
~Desperate for a cure to this disease~
She had felt something missing in her life for a long time. Sometimes seeing her parents, she had thought of how it would have felt to love someone.
~Well some days are better than others~
But now thinking she might get what her parents have, filled her heart with warmth.
~But I fear no thing as long as you're with me~
She turned in her seat and looked at Mrityunjay who was looking straight at the road and smiled.
~They say everything it happens for a reason~
Sensing Tara’s eye on him, he looked at her and smiled.
~You can be flawed enough, but perfect for a person~
She lowered her head and blushed a little. He chuckled softly. This new blushing Tara was intriguing.
~Someone who will be there for you when you fall apart~
He beamed, thinking it would be good to see her smiling and blushing a little because of him.
~Guiding your direction when you're riding through the dark~
Thinking about Tara as his companion for life made him feel good.
~Oh that's you and me~
They did not look at each other, but the feeling of someone made for you, made them feel more loved.
~That's you and me ~
They smiled as the song ended.
