How did this film become BO Gold! Is a statement most of us have uttered in frustration and exasperation at least once in our life.
Films like Kabir Singh, Houseful 4, Total Dhamaal etc. are not exactly for those who like quality in cinema, yet have done excellent business at the box-office. Whether a movie is good or not is mostly subjective. Someone will scream and shout that a movie like Bala is quality, while others would like to differ. It all depends on personal preference, and how much a movie earns probably won't change your preference. For example, the films I mentioned earned a lot, but were they "good"? According to me, no. According to others, maybe.
However in defence of the public, huge BO ticket sales does not necessarily mean one tremendous audience. A good chunk of those ticket sales are repeat viewers or as some would say 'repeat offenders.'
Kabir SIngh is the best example of this. It incited a certain demographic ( launde lapades) to watch the film again and again. But does that necessarily make it a work of quality? A good plot and exceptional acting may induce you to watch a movie many times in your life BUT several times in a week is unlikely UNLESS it is laced by other motives too.
Secondly, do you think marketing and PR play a big part?
So what does the average cinegoer want? Do you really think they want to leave their brains behind at home and just have a good time? Or do you believe people are attracted to a smart/ well-packaged/ entertaining films?
Discuss.
