Actress Hiba Bukhari may not be taking a stand for her character Zunaira in Tarap, but that has more to do with the drama’s theme than anything else.

It’s the agony that her character endures during the course of the play that makes the audience sympathize with her. Despite being an ideal elder sister, the perfect aunt (of a kid), the caring (grand) daughter, and the girl-next-door, she is assumed to be the person behind everything that goes bad by her folks.

However, when Spotlight asked Hiba Bukhari whether she is a bottled-up individual in real life, she categorically denied the allegation. She also spoke about working with the dashing Babar Ali, sharing a chemistry with Syed Jibran, and what Tarap holds for the audience in the coming weeks.

Tarap puts you alongside the best actors from two eras – Babar Ali (from the 1990s) and Syed Jibran (from 2010). Any other actress would have bolted under pressure but you haven’t; how was the experience of working with such co-stars?

I had worked with Syed Jibran earlier in Bholi Bano and we share good chemistry; it is always a pleasure working with an actor who treats his co-stars with respect. I was working with Babar Ali for the first time but trust me, they both were so good, so supportive, and courteous. Jibran is exactly the opposite of the character he plays in the drama and unlike ASP Adil, he is very co-operative and encouraging.

Despite his vast experience, Babar Ali was so down to earth that it was unbelievable; I still remember that after every scene together, Babar Ali was appreciating my performance and that gave me confidence. Not even people of my generation do that but he was telling me that you are doing a good job and that you did that scene well, etc. In short, while I was acting with them, I was literally on top, not at all under pressure!

Your character Zunaira is that of a girl who is always judged by others for no fault of her own … don’t you think that you have played the bechari a lot?

I do think that Zunaira is playing a bechari but that’s how the script has been written. I remember the characters I have done ever haven’t been just bechari bechari, they were fighting for themselves and had a say in the world; Zunaira is different than all of them.

It let me explore that side of acting where you can play a straight, white character for whom nothing is right, but you have to give all the expressions, look natural and do everything including delivering the variations. At one point I was even questioning myself but then that’s what makes it a unique character and I was fine with it later on.

Tarap focuses on your character a lot – you are a perfect phupi, a dutiful granddaughter, a talented writer, and an elder sis who cares for all. How did you manage to execute the character that had so many shades?

The more the merrier is what I would call this straight character, with lots of shades. It is in character like these that an actor gets the margin to perform to the best of their abilities and be a different person altogether in front of the world. I think I have managed to execute all shades, and it was fun to do all of these things together.

Any specific scene that you would like to mention where you had the most fun and why?

I believe all the scenes had their own fun and stories although, for me, the one scene with my onscreen nephew took the cake as it was something I hadn’t done in a long time.

For the scenes where the strict brother played by Jibran is angry at my character, we worked hard and since we share very good chemistry, we knew how to execute it. You will be seeing Saleem Meraj and Farah Nadir in the coming episodes and although scenes with them will make you sympathize with Zunaira, we had a lot of fun enacting them.

How different is Hiba Bukhari from Zunaira in real life? Is she fond of writing, caring when it comes to family, and above all, trying to make everyone happy?

In real life, Hiba Bukhari is very different from Zunaira; but yes she is fond of writing and is caring when it comes to her family (laughs).

I do try to keep everyone happy but at the same time, I am not a bechari at all. Not at all. I am a fighter, have a voice, and stand for what’s right. I don’t stay down and cry over things, I just try to make it happen!

What should the audience expect from your character in upcoming episodes?

Zunaira is the soul of Tarap, she tells the audience that if they don’t take care of minor things in life, nobody else will come and do that for them.

A lot of things will be taking place in Tarap where Zunaira will stay in her own character and not do something out of the ordinary. That will make people around her realize how kind she was and that she wasn’t the culprit. All you have to do is wait and see!

Tarap is getting on my nerves now. The lead actor and her role is annoying. I think the actor needs to fire her costume designer as he is not doing her any good.

I have been binge watching pak telly dramas and am in awe with the curious amalgamation of talent and well knit script. My recent favourites are - Dil lagi, Khaas, Daam, Mere paas tum ho, etc.

I would like to watch old pak serials online, in the likes of Kahi Unkahi, Ashk. Could anyone help me with the link or app to watch them? Would appreciate if someone can do yeh list for intense romantic dramas like Dil Lagi. Many Thanks!
