Before he became the lover boy with Jaanu Sunn Zara in the 1990s, Babar Ali was TV’s brightest star.

He had hit TV plays to his name such as Labbaik, Babar, She Jee, Sherry Aur Jozy and Boota From Toba Tek Singh to name a few. After a stint in Lollywood where he wooed beautiful women and had the best songs filmed on him, he is back to his base – Television.

With Tarap he has impressed the generation that was born after Jeeva and continues to do justice with the character of a person who suffers from a split personality disorder. One moment he is a caring husband and the other he is the nastiest person around, and only someone as experienced as Babar Ali would have been able to pull that off.

Spotlight got hold of the Chor Machaye Shor actor who spoke why he was absent from TV, why he chose to return with Tarap, and why he thinks that his best is yet to come. Read on:

Viewers at HUM TV haven’t had the chance to experience the Babar Ali magic, and now you are appearing in two major projects. What made you go for both Tarap and Zebaish?

Babar Ali: I was in the States for a period of time and that’s why I was away from the TV screen. That was the main reason why I wasn’t taking any projects but it has all changed with my return. Now that I am back in Pakistan, I want to do some quality work and entertain my fans.

Your character in Tarap has different shades; at times he is a loving husband and at times an unfaithful one. Where should the audience categorize you – the good guy or a bad one?

Babar Ali: Yes my character in Tarap has different shades, both of a good and a bad guy. That’s because I am playing a man who suffers from a split personality disorder. It was a challenging role for me and that’s why I was interested in going for

You are still a smart, handsome man who can woo any actress yet you chose to play mature characters in both the dramas. Any special reason behind that?

Babar Ali: I chose to play mature roles due to the fact I want to bring diversity in my acting career. I don’t want to limit myself to just certain kinds of roles. Having said that, this doesn’t mean I wouldn’t do roles with younger actresses (laughs).

Tell us something about your role in Zebaish and how is it different from that in Tarap?

Babar Ali: When Zebaish airs, you will see that my character in the drama is completely different from the one in Tarap. I cannot discuss it at the moment, but trust me, the audience will be in for a treat.

You started very young and achieved success in your youth; that’s why most of the actors of today have either grown up watching your films or dramas. How do you feel acting opposite them on TV?

Babar Ali: I always get along with my co-actors and I would have no problem acting with kids who grew up watching me. As a matter of fact, it will make me the proudest person if someone tells me that I was the reason they chose acting as their career.

Being in the 40s is always a tricky situation especially for a leading man. How do you plan to move ahead in the Naughty Forties on TV?

Babar Ali: Being in the 40s doesn’t bother me at all! I belong to that group which believes that the 40s is the age when your career takes a huge turn. It’s opening you to new horizons and the prime examples of that are actors like Humayun Saeed, Adnan Siddiqui and Noman Ijaz, etc. The great Amitabh Bachchan gained more popularity in his 40s than he did in the decades before that. I think this will give me an opportunity to do different roles which I couldn’t do as a young actor.

You have seen many young actors on TV … who do you think has the most potential to shine in the coming years?

Babar Ali: All young actors are good but my favorite one is Imran Ashraf of Ranjha Ranjha Kardi fame.

And finally what is the reason behind your forever-young look?

Babar Ali: As far looks are concerned, firstly it’s given by Almighty God and on top, just try living positively and maintain inner peace, and they will never let you age.

I did not like Tarap at all.. but I liked Babar's performance in the series in the 2/3 episodes I watched. I look forward to seeing him in Zebaish, as his role looks to be vital in the story.

this show gives me a headache but i still watch it.. Hiba's character annoys the eff out of me.. i think she is generally annoying in her shows because she plays bechari over the top holier than thou preachy characters...

i quite like how her sister doesn't take crap from anyone.. hopefully she gets a good ending and gets out of that toxic household.. and also hope the divorced sister in law has good things happen to her
