Chap 4-->Seeing her in Action
Subbu finally announced the teams after some deliberations and to Shravanâs dismay he and Suman were in the same team and they were supposed to gather data for ground surveillance. He had high hopes that he would not be working with Suman,but now he felt very disheartened. He walked away from the entire team to the place where he thought he would get some peace and could think straight, the open terrace. There was a storm brewing in the Bay of Bengal as the weather forecast mentioned a while ago and Shravan could see the outcome as the waves seem to have increased in frequency and were hitting the shores vigorously with enhanced force. The wind had also picked up speed causing the temporary shade for the pantry to rattle violently and the pantry guy started working on the nuts and bolts to tighten things up a bit to last in case the storm became worse. Shravan could see some clouds gathering at the far end ofthe horizon as the setting sun surrounded them with a red hue. As Shravan stood gazing lost in the ferocious seas his thoughts broke when he felt a hand on his shoulder and turned around to find Aneesh. Aneesh smiled at him and askedâWhatâs up with you Shravan, you have changed a lot, you seem to be brooding one since we have been here. You are no more the carefree, cool guy that you used to be.â
Shravan smiled and asked him whether he would like to have a cup of coffee. Both pickedup their coffee and tried to have a conversation, but the wind and the roar of the waves did not allow them to have a decent conversation. They moved to the edge of the staircase just inside the building and started sipping their coffee and conversing. There were loads they wanted to talk because they were meeting each other almost after 3-4 years. Shravan finally decided to share his dilemma with Aneesh and he mentioned to him that he was not happy about teaming up with Suman and neither was he interested to work with her team. He was apprehensive that she will steal the show and they will be left with only regrets. Aneesh was surprised at his chain of thoughts and he said âShravan when did you start thinking this way. You were the charming guy of our group who enthralled girls and loved being their centre of attention. People so wanted to be in Sumanâs team,the enigmatic, beautiful smart lady and you are upset because she and you are a teamâ. Shravan had a lost smile on his face as he seemed reminiscing his days in the Police Academy but soon his face was hard and he said â You guys are free to propose yourself and be part of her team, I will anyways talk to my boss and be out of this project itself . I do not want to be in the same team as Suman nor do I want to work in this project where I must interact with her dailyâ.Aneesh was aghast hearing the line of thought that Shravan was thinking along but anyways it was his decision and who knows he might be the lucky one to get to work with the beauty with brains, Suman and if not, anything have a nice time. He patted Shravan on his back and stepped out in the terrace to have a smoke as Shravan turned around to see Suman standing shocked at the landing of the stairs. It was evident that she had heard if not all at least most of the conversation. As Shravan took a step towards her when she turned on her heels and almost ran from there. Shravan rushed down the stairs when he was stopped by Saheb who mentioned that the NCB team was going on a mission and a small team could accompany them so it could be hands-on for them. Shravan was all for such adventure and challenges but write now he had messed up big time. He had to find Suman lest she jeopardizes his plans by opening her mouth in front of Subbu. He ran to the 3rd floor where Suman and the entire team were working out from, but the floor did not have much people apart from the few clerical staff and they obviously did not have any idea where the team had gone. Shravan ran down the stairs instead of using the lift to pump blood to his brains faster so he could think of an innovative way to stop her. There were just two cars lined up in the reserved parking area where IOs parked their cars and he finally caught his object of attention. Suman was there all ready for the raid they were going for and he could see she was checking her bullets and tucking in the gun behind her back. Shravan ran as fast as he could and from a few meters he knew Suman had sensed that as her posture turned stiff as she turned around to face him . Shravan said the first thing that came to his mouth âI am sorry Suman.. I mean Officer Suman for what I said today morning, Iactually did not mean itâ. For few seconds he waited for her to reply but her straight face did not give away anything and just when he thought she had not heard Suman said â Do not say something you do not mean. If you did not mean the words, then then you do not mean the sorry as well now. Careful OfficerMalhotra you are in a job where we say words which mean lot to lot of people.Regarding your working with me I canât help it. The best I can do is give you the option to go to another team but since you do not want to be around anywhere near me and since I love my job and I am not going to step away from here , you have to obviously do the favours. By the way you need not wait foryour boss, you can just let Subbu know he will do the needful and donât worry Iwill not let him know anything that I have heard. Itâs your story to tell andyou can go aheadâ.
Shravan felt like he had been thrown in a tub of ice-cold water in freezing winters. He fumbled and he finally managed to say âYou can ask Aneesh to help you, he wouldbe very interested, you can probably let your boss know that you are not happy with his choiceâ. Shravan stopped as he noticed Suman was smiling her characteristic sarcastic smile when she said âOfficer Malhotra, thanks for the help. Let me enlighten you that I wanted you to be part of my team, but I guess I was wrong but no worries I can handle things on my ownâ. Shravan was now stumped,he had not expected this but he had to know so he asked âWhy meâ? He thoughtSuman will not answer but she looked at him straight in the eye and said âWhy not? An SP who had in just a few years of service had been part of thedecorated Greyhound , one who was part of the crucial operation which thwarted the attempt to assassinate the CM of the state against Maoists â. Shravan now smiled and asked âI see you have done your homework pretty well and fast. But why not Aneesh, you two seems to get along wellâ.
Suman: Your work history is something Subbu Sir has and he has handpicked from the resumes sent.He has a sharp eye for right people and as of I am concerned, I was given a choice to pick up my team member and I just did my job. As far as Aneesh is concerned, he might get along well with me , I am not sure why you think so but he seems to be more interested in me than the mission. He might need some mentoring which Subbu Sir will probably do but not meâ.
Before Shravan could ask anything, more Suman said âOfficer Malhotra if you havefurther questions, I am sorry you will have to hold till I am back because weare getting late. You can get into the car at the back with your other colleagues, she pointed to a black sedan parked. Saheb has the directions and he will guide you all. But if you do not want to come, I completely understand.Once I am back tomorrow then probably you will be gone. All the bestâ. She turned and walked away without another word.
The evening was darker than usual with clouds hovering over as the cars sped away with teams on their mission. The wind was leaving a dusty trail now as it blew against Shravanâs face tagging along dried leaves, plastic bagss as he blinked his eyes to focus on the map in his hand. They were speeding on the highway towards Chennai Port when they heard Shashank on the Bluetooth. The informer has sent the vehicle details which he sent to the team, in which the consignment was loaded No vehicle would follow the consignment after two turns to avoid detection. Minimum distance of at least two cars behind was to be adhered to as per protocol. The team kept following the vehicle in turns when Suman spoke âSir, the vehicle is being followed discreetly by another Hyundai i10 redcar, I am sending the details. Can you please get this details checked with our airport contact if it was in the airport and where all this car travelled from.I am sending the number, but we need to be careful as I have a hunch this car is shadowing the small pickup truck with the consignmentâ. Sash as he was fondly called, got on his job and after some time his voice was on the conference call that yes he checked with the airport authority and they confirmed that the car had exited the airport parking but they were still tracing when and who parked it there because the in-time seems to be missing.Sid mentioned that the number plate will most probably be fake, but he was still checking with the RTO.
The NCB cars were following instructions when one of them lost track of the consignment due to some commotion in the road, but it was evident that they were headed towards the docks. The team after consultation decided to head towards the docks. They were sure that the consignment would get loaded in one of the containers to be shipped or it would travel somewhere by road. The police were alerted to look for the vehicle at all toll checks to ensure it does not leave the city limits while the NCB headed to the docks. After some searches the team were able to spot the vehicle which carried the consignment. They were done loading consignment to the container which would be loaded to the ship. The team were just there on the nick of time to catch them before the vehicle disappeared with the consignment. All of them closed in and grabbed the men who were supervising the operation. The smugglers were caught a little off guard as they did not expect somebody was on their heels. They did not have time for even reaching or their guns
The team got busy with handcuffing the consignment handlers when it started drizzling and thundering. In this cacophony what they did not notice was that the driver of the vehicle carrying the consignment was still sitting in his place a littleahead of where they were capturing the fugitives and seeing them a little distracted, he started the vehicle and started driving away. Suman was the nearest to the vehicle and the first to notice and she turned and ran behind the vehicle fast, furious, straight and smooth kicking off bouts of the slightly wet dust in the air. The others turned to see her running behind the consignment and they knew that was the only way to get hold of them, given that their cars were parked a little far and the approach roads were too narrow to get them there. Shash immediately asked few of them to get to the cars and drive to the other side of the docks so that they can block the vehicle and the rest including Shravan ran behind Suman. The rain was now pelting down drenching everyone and Shravan was in awe looking at the way Suman trudged ahead not caring that the rain was soaking her from the top while the muddy streets were bathing her in slush as she sprinter across the slushy kuccha road.Her steps were firm and sure footed as she hardly slipped in the torrential rain. He was the first person behind Suman and he could clearly hear her heels thudding against the small stones and splashing puddle of blackish, muddy water around. Suman was way ahead of them followed by Shasank , Aneesh, Shravan and Saheb when they noticed that Suman was almost nearing the truck when she managed to shoot at one of the truckâs wheels. Although the bullet missed the wheel by a whisker the loud clang on the metal caused the driver to look behind and as it slowed a little with the jerk Suman jumped and caught hold of the two holders at the sides of the truck and managed to climb up using the narrow space behind the container to gain foothold. She kept hanging precariously as she kept slipping in the torrential rain but managed to cling to the back of the truck. Shravan had his heart in his throat as he saw Suman dangling dangerously behind the truck trying her best to climb up. With the rain gushing down she was slipping everytime she pushed herself up but trying her best to cling to the slippery surface. She slipped once almost to the edge and all were scared she would fall but she managed to get back the foothold and then she gave a final push and she was able to lift herself up on the roof and was able to crawl on the roof of the small truck and reach the driverâs window and was already trying to fight with him using her free hand. The activity had caused the truck to slow down and the others were able to reach Suman and the truck driver soon to extricate him out and get hold of the consignment and the vehicle.
Suman got down from the truck and the first thing Shravan noticed was that she had bruises on her hand and her palm was bleeding and he immediately shouted at Rajesh(another colleague ) âRajesh first aid jaldi!!â. Suman looked up at him alittle surprised, when she noticed Shravan pointing his hand towards his shoulder and when she followed the path she noticed that her shirt had torn during the chase and her bra was visible till the top of the cups and she immediately tried putting her injured arm there to cover herself. She noticed that Shravan was already taking off hisjacket when she felt somebody wrapping her from back. She immediately turned to see Shasank smiling down at her. She smiled back as she covered herself in the jacket and zipped up when he stretched out his hand and said, âGood Job Sumanâ.She smiled a small thank you and just before she walked away, she turned to notice Shravan wearing back his jacket and if it was not an illusion, she noticed that he was a little hurt. She was not sure what was the reason but from the conversation she heard earlier she thought he might be again angry that she was congratulated or maybe he wanted Suman to share his jacket, you heard he was concerned (her heart quipped). Suman smiled at herself at her silly thoughts as she walked enjoying the rain which was now a drizzle towards the car where the first aid kit was waiting for her.
