I had written it in a another topic
Mahabharata clearly mentions that Rukmi and Balram didn't participate in the war. Why specially mention about them? There were many others who remained neutral, Cholas and Cheras weren't involved, Babhruwahan (Manipur) wasn't involved, no one joined from BangDesh or KalingDesh (I think so correct if I am wrong).
Hence I feel special mention of Rukmi and Balram needs to serve some functions.
That I feel was because these two were close relatives to the Gopala or the Mathura Krishna who belonged to a time different from Mahabharata, but later had got intermerged with the Krishna of Mahabharata, hence the absence of his close ones(who couldn't have joined since they belonged to different time) had to be justified specifically especially when the claim was that it became a world war (it certainly wasn't)
Coming to the topic I think even Sudama doesn't find a very old origin.
Radha and Sudama could be a part of the Bhakti movement and element.
I believe Radha is a creation of the Bhakti movement. 🤔
