Being rich and privileged in the age of Coronavirus

We've seen with Hollywood celebrties complaning about being locked. We've seen white men protest outside beaches of California, and the state governor's halls in Michigan, Mike Pence not wearing a mask at a hospital, but we tend to get that the rich and privileged also exist in India. The exceptions made for Rishi Kapoor and his family is a blunt disgrard of laws and rules. These laws and rules only apply to poor people. We've seen poor people getting beaten by the policy, but why make exceptions for the Kapoor family? When we've also had many families that died in hospitals without their families present, burried without their families present. I don't care if he's some big superstar, but you're allowing the rich and privilged to get away with a lot of rules and laws.

There was no privilege here. The only time you can’t be at the funeral is when the person actually succumbs to Corona while at the hospital. Here, Rishi Kapoor died of cancer related complications. In fact, same for Irfan. In case of death due to any other reason, 20 people are allowed to attend the rites.

The fact that according to rules they couldn’t wait and his own daughter was denied the right to hop on a chartered flight and missed seeing him in his last moments also shows the same.

If he had died of Corona, things would have been different or your topic would have been valid.

True i doubt police will allow anyone to travel because some ones dead in family thousand miles away even if you say will drive car

Because of lockdown many missed funeral of loved ones

Also many family are serious in hospitals with ailments and loved ones cannot go to be with them unlike normal days

Very few will get permission

Also funeral not many get permission only wife, children and parents

Sometimes siblings also not allowed in funeral now as they are in red zones (although same city or nearby city)

considering Maharasthra has the maximum number of covid cases in India. This gathering simply defeated the purpose of lockdown.

if the justification is that the person didn't die of corona or family doesn't have the same then this makes the country lockdown a waste.

It's not like 100 people attended the funeral chill n relax the Indian govt is Trying it's best its not easy to do a lockdown with such a booming population with so many immigrants from all over the country n remember if celebrities or rich have some privellages they also contribute in taxes n donations which is very imp at the moment for every govt that are financially strapped bec the lower income will get more help or at least meals

What are the rules regarding this? I thought you could keep the body for a day.

On topic: For non-COVID deaths, 20 people are allowed to attend the funeral. And for marriages, 50 guests are allowed. This is applicable to all citizens of India.

Sadly there is privilege in both the cases if you read newspaper of mumbai daily. Normal people are being turned away from dialysis and other cancer related issues like chemo therapy. People are finding it hard to get admitted to hospital, half of the hospitals have collapsed. Not everyone can afford to get admitted to a big hospital like kokilaben and reliance in emergency. No family would be allowed to have so many members in the hospital premises like the Kapoors were because of very strict measures here in Mumbai. The situation here is TERRIBLE! People are dying from pregnancy, no dialysis because hospitals are asking for corona test and they are failing to procure results within time. So even in such a sad time of mourning, unfortunately the privileged are still having an upper hand over normal citizens.

True that big private hospitals and small ones in metroes/big cities also want negative covid report to treat unwell people

Pray if you are having heart attack or diabetic and kidney complications how will they get certificate?

They need immediate treatment

Very sad many will die because big hospital refuse to treat without corona negative reports

Yeah, Covid has thrown a curve ball like no other. The only thing we are praying daily now is that no one falls sick. Because for even a small test, you will need a corona test and that small thing can lead to a big ailment while waiting unattended for corona report. I also understand the need for a corona test because we need to keep our doctors and ground staff safe and that's why the priority right now should be PPE kits for them more than anything else. It's not just heartbreaking but even scary that people are being turned away from something like a dialysis and chemo therapy, these are such important procedures to keep people alive, can't even think in my wildest dreams what people suffering from cancer and kidney failure are going through :(
