I completely discount reincarnation, so the pregnancy theory is the only alternative I came up with.

Plus, neither Shikhandi nor anyone related to him ever claims he is Amba reincarnated. So how does Bheeshma know?

I'm extrapolating that he knew she was pregnant.

Theory, of course. But pretty much the only one I could come up with without involving divine element/reincarnation which would fit the events.

There is a difference between Amba and Satyavati. Amba said that she loved Shalya and was therefore was not deemed fit to be Kuru Vadhu Satyavati or Ganga didn't love their partners. Shalya was a royal Prince of a state to visit another state princess and impregnate her doesn't look much feasible

P.S. if it actually was like that this means Shikhandi was a cousin of Pandu and Dhritrashtra or uncle of Pandavas and Kauravas! So Pandavas married the foster sister of their uncle....

I really don't understand how these ages were. Kripi was equal in age to Kripacharya, so she would have been born by the birth of Vichitraveer(I.e. she was elder to him). Then how come her son Ashwathama was of the age of Vichitraveer's grandson girls have a limited fertile age

I don't negate reincarnation, but that's just different POVS.

Now I think Bhishma honestly didn't know, but he just understood that this is happening to him because of what he did. I mean just something metaphorical or symbolic. I don't think Bhishma has some surety of facts to prove the woman/man before him is Amba reincarnated. But just, Karma you know :)

In Amba-Upakhyana Parva, Bhishma narrated Amba and Shikhandi's story to Duryodhana when the latter questioned why won't he fight against Shikhandi. In Bhishma's own words, he knew all about the reincarnation and the secret of Shikhandi being born a girl via a spy, Narada, and gods.

Actually he knew it all. He narrated the entire story to Duryodhana.

Was this after he was defeated though?

Before the start of the war.

After Duryodhana appointed him the commander-in-chief, Bhishma clearly told him he won't fight against Shikhandi. Upon being asked the reason, he narrated the whole story starting with the Kashi abduction.

Now the question is how did he know😆

TBH, I find it hard to see this without the divine angle where Amba was destined to be reborn as Shikhandi. But just confirm this did he not fight because Shikhandi was originally a woman and he didn't wish to fight with a woman, or did he simply want to let Amba succeed his revenge?

A spy, Narada, and gods were the sources. That's how he knew. 😆

@Bold - Both. He confessed he'd die before killing a woman. Then the fact that he himself suggested the placement of Shikhandi on the 10th day shows he wanted to release himself from the past sin.

Impossible to believe without divine element.

So yeah, in my interp, this was something else.
