Covid-19 isn't going away anytime soon. Vaccines are still 16-18 months away. So what will happen in Bollywood in the coming 1-1.5 years? Share your predictions. Here are mine:

  • Even after lockdown is lifted people would avoid theatres like the plague at least for a few more months, so there would be a big surge in streaming platform users
  • 80% of the current movies that are almost made will skip theatrical release and come to OTT platforms directly
  • Very few movies will be commissioned for the next year: mostly only big budget movies featuring major stars. Expect a sudden dip in number of movie releases in 2020 and 2021
  • Most films with shoots less than 30-40% complete will be stalled or shelved
  • Web series will get more popular. Eventually (in 5 years time), most major actors would be working in web series instead of movies
  • Most married actresses will get pregnant because shoots may not resume for almost a year: including Priyanka, Anushka, Sonam, Deepika

Corona may wipe out the concept of going to the movies even after it is over .

I dont know why ppl want to replace movie theatres with streaming services . Watching movies on the big screen is a completely different experience than watching on some TV or laptop . Also the poor or single screen audience cant afford or understand how to watch online

Forget going to the theaters, how would the actors act with spotboy's getting an earful for going too near to the actors, the co-actors standing 6ft away, kissing and hugging from that distance, makeup artists using bargepole to do hair and makeup?

Exactly... if TV channels showing movies hasn't replaced movies being released in theatres, I don't think Netflix, Hotstar etc. will! I think streaming platforms could ever replace theatres, more likely they'll just become like an alternative to TV the way TV became an alternative to radio.

I agree, big screen viewing is not going anywhere. However, it is a dying business. It is no longer a big avenue for entertainment like it was a couple of decades ago, when there was hardly any other source of entertainment. Now we have many more alternatives for leisure activities, so cinemas have taken a backseat and its share of the entertainment pie has shrunk. This was happening regardless of Covid.

But with Covid-19, it has suddenly forced people to adapt to streaming platforms, and since things will remain like this for months, if not a year, it will bring about a behavioural change in people, who will not be so willing to go to theatres anymore.

I am talking about my mom who used to visit theatres a few times a year, and used to find it a hassle - to get ready, book tickets in advance, go through traffic, deal with general public, etc. Now we have a home theatre setup at home with a 60 inch LED TV and great speakers, with Netflix, Prime, Hotstar available. She is not going to visit a theatre again for sure. And there are many like her.

But yes, the poor audience who don't know how to watch online will still throng to single screens for entertainment and they will keep them going, because for them, they still don't have that many entertainment avenues.
