Chapter 4: Chaotic Hearts
Komolika had just descended the stairs for breakfast. She greeted the family in the sweetest fake way possible. Everyone had replied just the same. Anurag was feeling suffocated in his own house now. Earlier it didn't matter much because his heart had shut down but since Prerna was back he felt different, he felt stronger. He really couldn't take Komolika's crap any longer. But when he looked around the table he saw his family smiling. How would they live if Anurag left Komolika? He might be able to save Prerna but Komolika would definitely throw them out of this house. He looked at his mother. She would die if she had to leave Basu Baari. This was her palace. She had taken care of the house like a baby. He looked at Nivedita who had a sunken face. She wouldn't be able to survive the hardships of a life without luxury. He sighed and pushed down the thoughts of running away.
Komolika was just about to eat breakfast when she got a call. She left in a hurry. Anurag suspected something fishy and decided to follow her.
Komolika entered a small house in Howrah. Ronit sat across from the nurse who was crying. Komolika gave a victory nod to Ronit before focussing her rage on the nurse. "Kitne paise diye the maine tumhe," she growled. "Ek bachi ko nahi sambhal paayi."
The nurse was scared. She kept quiet. "Woh wapas kese pahuch gayi?" Komolika questioned.
Tears started pouring out of the nurse's eyes. "Tum jaanti ho tumne kya kiya hai?" Komolika's face stiffened. She wanted to kill the nurse. Little did she know that Anurag had snuck up near the door and was listening to them. He needed to know what Komolika and her nuisance of a brother were cooking.
"Bolo!" Komolika pushed the nurse.
"Madam, woh sahab ne mujhse bohot saare sawal kiye. Main nahi jaanti thi ki woh unki beti hai." The nurse tried to defend herself. "Woh maan hi nahi rahe the jab maine unse bola ki Sneha meri beti hai."
Anurag's eyes widened. He wasn't able to understand what was happening. He recalled the last conversation he had overheard about someone being back. Was the someone Sneha?
"Toh tumne unhe sach bata diya!" Komolika was enraged. No explanation would make this okay. "Tum jaanti ho tumne kya kiya hai? Tumne Komolika Basu ka ghar barbaad karne ki koshish ki hai! Iske liye main tumhe chodungi nahi."
The nurse cried louder. "Maine toh bas bachi ko uske maa baap--"Shut up!" Komolika roared.
"Di," Ronit interrupted, "Ab iss sab ka kya fayda, Sneha ko Mr. Bajaj ne apna liya hai. Anurag ko ab kuch nahi pata lagega."
Komolika shot Ronit a death glare. "Tum uss Prerna ko nahi jaante. Woh saap ki tarah wapas Anurag ki life mein ghus jayegi. Agar usne Anurag ko sach bata diya ki Sneha uski beti hai, toh Anurag sab chod dega. Woh-- woh mujhe chod dega!" She said tilting her head a little. "Aur Diya-- Diya ke saath main esa hone nahi dungi." She said with utmost determination.
Anurag couldn't believe what he was hearing. Sneha was his daughter? But then why had Mr. Bajaj so confidently said that Sneha was his? Komolika was trying to harm his daughter?
"Di, kya karna hai iss nurse ka?" Ronit asked almost irritably. He wanted to get this over with. He believed his sister was losing her mind with her insecurity of losing Anurag. He just wanted to get back and handle the business empire she had just given him. He wanted to feel power and money rushing through his veins and for that he had to bear all this craziness. But he was stuck here, wasting time in her domestic problems.
"Yeh nurse ab mere liye koi kaam ki nahi hai." Komolika frowned. "Par isse saza milegi, isne jo mere saath kiya, iski saza isse zaroor milegi." She said in disgust. The nurse was taken aback. She was frightened. "Abhi chalo yaha se." she said, "Uss bachi ka mujhe khud hi kuch karna hoga." Komolika said with unnerving anger. She stormed out of the house with Ronit.
The nurse remembered Mr. Bajaj's words. He had warned her that this might happen once Sneha was back. She would have to meet him. Anurag, on the other hand, didn't understand what had happened. He needed answers and he only knew one person who would give him the answers he wanted.

Prerna had set the lunch in her cabin. She was glad that Mr. Bajaj had listened to her advice and spoken to Kukki. She smiled thinking about how suddenly her family seemed complete. She had two beautiful children. Her mother and siblings were close to her and she had a great partner who was also her friend. Mr. Bajaj had not expected anything from her all these years. He had just been the rock that she needed. He had always encouraged and empowered her. He had always thought about her goals and targets and planned his own accordingly. She didn't know why today all these thoughts were coming to her but she told herself that sometimes in life when we're running after something we miss out on these small things, which actually matter a lot. She was so engrossed in planning Anurag's destruction that somewhere she had overlooked the people close to her. But now that Sneha was back in her life, she could feel love again. Sneha was the little light in the dark room of her heart.
She was lost in thought when Mr. Bajaj came in and took a seat in front of her. "Prerna," he said interrupting her thought. She looked up at him and gave a weak smile. "Kya soch rahi hai aap?"
"Kuch nahi," she said sitting up and opening the tiffin. "Aap bataiye, Kukki se baat hui?"
A smile formed on Mr. Bajaj's lips that took Prerna by surprise again. She was not used to seeing him smile. But she was glad that he was. He deserved to be happy. She couldn't help but smiling herself. Mr. Bajaj straightened his face realising what he was doing.
"Haan, baat ho gayi. Ab sab thik hai." he said with a sigh. "Par woh ladka!" Mr. Bajaj remembered getting protective again. Prerna narrowed her eyes. Did he also realise that Kukki was always talking about just one boy?
"Prerna, Kukki ke college mein Basu family ka woh ladka hai. Itti badtameezi se baat kar raha tha Kukki se!" He complained. Prerna wondered who it was. She made a mental note to ask Kukki later. "Kaun tha woh?" she asked suddenly becoming serious.
"Naam nahi pata but ab woh Kukki se baat karne se pehle 100 baar sochega." he said.
Prerna sighed. Why was she worrying at all, she thought. Mr. Bajaj would never let anything touch his daughters. She smiled looking at his worried face again. She couldn't understand why she was smiling at Mr. Bajaj so much. She wondered what had changed suddenly. She recalled how today her heart had started racing when she was close to Mr. Bajaj. Maybe it was just because of his sudden pull. She was just taken aback, she reasoned with herself.
"Prerna?" Mr. Bajaj said waving his hand in front of her eyes. "Aap kaha kho gayi hai?" he asked.
Prerna shook her head awkwardly. She was going crazy. "Khana start kariye na." she told him.
"Haan, I'm very hungry." he said.
As they ate Prerna tried to extract more details on what Mr. Bajaj told Kukki. It was a task to get Mr. Bajaj to express. He tried his best to explain the whole thing and by the end Prerna had tears in her eyes. "Kukki kitni khush hogi," She smiled. Mr. Bajaj couldn't take his eyes off Prerna. He wondered how she managed it all. She was an excellent businesswoman and at the same time so sensitive to her kids. She knew how to be stern and soft. She knew how to be bold and loving. He watched her smile. It was so easy to make Prerna smile.
"Wese main soch raha tha how about we plan a holiday?" Rishabh asked.
Prerna's eyes lit up. "Holiday?"
"Haan, hum sabke liye acha rahega."
"But Mr. Bajaj itna kaam baaki hai aur hamara agla vaar Basu group pe--"Prerna" he said, "I know maine hi aapse kaha tha ki apne ander nafrat ko badhne dijiye and fir hum vaar karenge par ab Sneha aapke paas hai, aur Kukki bhi aur main--" he stopped. "Mera matlab hai ki kya aap nahi chahti ki kuch din iss nafrat se dur, apne bacho ke saath time spend kare? I think all of us need this." he sighed.
Prerna grinned. "I can't believe ki aap yeh sab keh rahe hai!"
Rishabh frowned."Matlab? Main ku nahi keh sakta?"
"The Rishabh Bajaj, jinhone kaam ke alawa kabhi kuch socha nahi. Woh keh rahe hai ki kaam toh hota rahega, holiday pe chalte hai" She teased.
Mr. Bajaj couldn't control his smile any longer. He let go and gave her a full smile. "Pehle kaam ke alawa kuch tha nahi meri life mein magar ab--"
Their conversation was broken by Prerna's secretary. He looked apologetic as he entered. "Ma'am, sorry for disturbing, but Mr. Anurag Basu is here and he is insisting on seeing you immediately. He is saying it's very urgent."
Prerna's jaw clenched. "Unhe conference room mein wait karne kaho." She said coldly.
The secretary nodded and left. Prerna was lost in her thoughts again. Her face was more fierce now. Anger reflected in her eyes. Mr. Bajaj knew his wife very well. She wouldn't be able to eat another bite unless she spoke to Anurag first. Her anger was quite evident on her face.
"Prerna," he said gulping his food down. "You carry on, I'll finish my food and leave, Meri meeting hai thodi der mein anyway." He said.
"Nahi Mr. Bajaj," she said looking at him. "Lunch khatam karte hai pehle." She said taking a bite of her food. Rishabh was surprised once again. He half smiled before eating his food. He was glad she was making an attempt to not make everything about Anurag.
"Wese, last meeting ke baad pata nahi kya baaki reh gaya hai?" Prerna wondered out loud.
Mr. Bajaj was clueless too. He was a little curious to know what Anurag had to say.
"But Prerna, be careful. Last time jo proposal Mr. Basu ne diya tha, that seemed very off." he said.
"Matlab?"
"I've seen how Mr. Basu works and I also know how he thinks. This isn't him. Kuch gadbad hai." he pointed out.
"Main bhi sochti thi ki main jaanti hu Anurag kese sochta hai." she said with hatred, "Par ab, he's just a stranger."
Mr. Bajaj thought about what Prerna said and agreed to her. Something was different this time.
"Main aapke saath rukunga." he declared. "I don't trust Basu now."
"But Mr. Bajaj aapki meeting--"Nahi Prerna, I've decided."
"I can manage this, Mr. Bajaj," she tried to explain.
"I know you can. Yeh aapke liye nahi kar raha hu main. This is for my peace of mind. I need to know what he is up to."
Prerna realised there was no point arguing. And she didn't mind Mr. Bajaj being there either.
They finished their lunch in peace and went to see Anurag.
Anurag stood up as soon as Prerna entered the room. He was about to speak when Mr. Bajaj entered behind her. A frown formed on his face. He wanted to speak to Prerna alone.
"I'd like to speak to Prerna alone." he announced.
Mr. Bajaj was about to revolt when Prerna said, "Firstly, you're in our office, you don't dictate the terms. And secondly, its Mrs. Bajaj for you, Mr. Anurag Basu." She said through her gritted teeth.
Mr. Bajaj had a straight face as he came and stood by Prerna. He didn't let it reflect on his face but he was really enjoying this moment. Whenever she referred to herself as Bajaj, especially in front of Anurag, he could feel his cheeks heat up. What did he want to talk to Prerna alone about anyway? He wondered.
"Prerna, yeh personal hai!" Anurag tried to argue.
"Excuse me?" Prerna spat, "Humare beech 'personal' kuch nahi baaki hai." she said decisively.
Rishabh narrowed his eyes at Anurag. What was he playing at? He wondered.
"Hai Prerna! Humare beech personal hai!" Anurag stated. "Jisse tumne itne saal mujhse dur rakha. Meri beti!" he announced.
Prerna's eyes widened and Mr. Bajaj clenched his fists. "What?" she gasped. She couldn't believe Anurag had just called Sneha his own. Rage was a very mild word for what overcame Prerna.
"Haan Prerna, I want to meet her, I want to meet my--"Get out." Prerna said with hatred written over her face. Mr. Bajaj would have said the same if Prerna hadn't.
"Prerna, you can't do this to me. Woh meri bhi beti hai!" Anurag fought. "Just Get out!" she yelled. Mr. Bajaj was shocked too listening to the force with which she said it. "How dare you?" She roared. She was a lioness protecting her cub. She wouldn't back down. Mr. Bajaj wanted to calm Prerna down but he didn't, it wasn't the right moment. Anurag wasn't backing down either. He needed a confirmation today. He needed answers. If Sneha was his child how could she actually keep her so far away for 8 years!
Mr. Bajaj couldn't believe what he was hearing right now. He wished he wasn't here for this conversation. He couldn't tolerate Anurag calling Sneha his daughter.
Prerna internally battled with her emotions. 8 years ago she would have been thrilled to see this kind of faith that Sneha was his child but today she loathed every word coming out of his mouth.
"Kaun?" she said folding her hands over her chest. She gulped and forced her tears back down. Her face was straight. No emotion. Not a speck.
"Anurag we don't have a child together." She continued.
Anurag's eyes widened. "Stop lying to me!" Anurag would go mad. Why would Komolika lie? She wouldn't be behind Sneha if this was the case.
"Main ku jhooth kahungi?" she laughed. "Mr. Bajaj," she said turning to him. He could see it. She couldn't hide her pain from him. There was just hatred in those big eyes of hers. The purity of that hatred even scared Mr. Bajaj for a moment. "Please ask this man to leave. Pagal ho gaya hai yeh."
"Prerna main nahi jaunga yaha se." Anurag declared. "Mr. Basu." Rishabh said sternly. "Prerna ko jo kehna tha woh keh chuki hai. Please leave."
"Prerna ko mere questions ka answer dena hi hoga." he was adamant.
"Sneha meri beti hai," Mr. Bajaj said getting angry now. "Aap mujhe offend kar rahe hai iss waqt yeh sab kehke. Prerna meri wife hai and aap-- aap koi nahi hai. You have no relation with my family! Please leave warna mujhe aur bhi tareeke aate hai aapko yaha se nikalwane ke." he spat.
Anurag ignored Mr. Bajaj, his eyes were fixed on Prerna. "Prerna ku kar rahi ho tum esa." he said with tears in his eyes. "Main jaanta hu main tumhara gunhegaar hu but uss bachi se apna pita mat chheeno. Mujhse meri beti--"Shut up!" Prerna burst. "Just shut up." Mr. Bajaj was taken aback by the her outburst.
"Sneha tumhari beti nahi hai!" she said again. "Tumne aur tumhari wife ne already meri beti ko maarne ki koshish ki thi 8 saal pehle. Agar dobara uske--"Maarne ki?" Anurag gasped. "Main kabhi apni cutie pie ko hurt nahi kar sakta.." he said.
She wanted to believe that Anurag was saying the truth but she didn't. He was a murderer. She had witnessed that with her own eyes. "Main apni beti se 8 saal dur thi!" she screamed. "Tumhari wajah se! Why can't you and your bloody wife let us live in peace!" She was screaming and tears were streaming down her eyes. Anurag could see her hate in her eyes. He could now see the pain he had given her.
Anurag tried to move towards Prerna but Mr. Bajaj stopped him. "Mr. Basu, iss baat ke liye yeh na sahi jagah hai aur na hi sahi waqt." he said. "Main aakhri baar keh raha hu please leave."
Anurag looked to Prerna. Did she really think he would ever try and kill their child? He gulped as reality hit him. Prerna already thinks that he tried to kill her. Then how is it far-fetched if she thinks he tried to kill their child too? And that thought right there broke Anurag. A tear trickled down his eyes as well. He looked to the floor and without another word he left.
Mr. Bajaj turned to Prerna. He placed his hand on her shoulder. She hugged him. She placed her head against his chest and cried louder. "Shh," Rishabh whispered stroking her head.
Prerna was hurting so much. Hearing all this from Anurag was difficult. She wanted her child to know her father. But after what Anurag had done she couldn't imagine Sneha finding out who her father really was. How long would she be able to protect Sneha from Anurag? How would she stop Anurag from telling Sneha the truth? How did Anurag find out the truth? What made him so sure that Sneha was his child. All these thoughts were messing with her mind.
"Prerna," Mr. Bajaj said softly. Prerna pulled back and wiped her tears. Mr. Bajaj looked for his handkerchief but remembered he had given it to Kukki in the morning. Why were the women in his life crying on the same day? "Aap thik hai?" he said looking into her eyes with worry all over his face.
Prerna wiped the last tears and looked at Mr. Bajaj. "Main thik hu."
Mr. Bajaj knew she was lying. But she didn't want to rub it in. "I know Prerna. Aap bohot strong hai." he said trying to encourage her. "Prerna, Mr. Basu ke kuch bhi kehne se kuch nahi hoga. Please, aap pareshaan mat hoiye."
"Mr. Bajaj, main nahi chahti ki woh Sneha ki life mein aaye. Par usne Sneha se sach keh diya toh? Hum kese samjhayenge uss bachi ko?" she questioned.
"Sneha ko kuch pata nahi chalega." Mr. Bajaj assured. "Aur sach kya hai Prerna? Aapne hi uss din kaha tha ki Sneha ka papa main hu, aur hamesha rahunga. Main hamari family ko kuch nahi hone dunga. Bharosa rakhiye." He said holding her hand and squeezing it. "I don't care who's DNA recombined with whose. All I know is that Sneha is my daughter. And main usse kahi nahi jaane dunga."
Prerna nodded. She had learned to have faith in Mr. Bajaj. She knew only one thing that no matter what, Mr. Bajaj had stood by her through her worst times. He was her family. She didn't need to worry about anything. She sighed. She was glad that he was with her in front of Anurag otherwise she might not have been able to hold herself together.
Mr. Bajaj had convinced Prerna but he was restless. For the first time Bajaj carried a fear. He didn't want to lose Sneha. Prerna was about to say something but Mr. Bajaj walked out of the conference room. He went to him cabin.
He couldn't understand how Anurag had found out the truth? How was he so sure? He shut his eyes and leaned back in his chair. He tried to calm himself down. He remembered how he lived before Prerna came into his life. He was always in control. He always used his mind. His heart was just an instrument pumping blood. He had a daughter who was only his, they had a tiny little world. Then Prerna entered his life. He learnt what love was, he learnt how to use his heart. He fell in love with a person who wasn't his to love. She loved another man. Even though she was married to Mr. Bajaj, her soul belonged to someone else. Coming to terms with this fact had broken him from inside. He had become stone once again. He was in a marriage which was nothing more than a facade. His daughter had drifted away from him. He was alone. Then this little princess came into his life who loved him and cared for him. Who called him 'papa' and yearned for his attention. For the first time he felt that he belonged somewhere. He felt that he had a family. And just half an hour back God had slapped him with the truth. This was a lie too. Sneha wasn't his either. Sneha was someone else's too. And what about him? He was still an outsider. A trespasser. He thought. For the first time Rishabh felt helpless. He felt broke. He didn't know what he would do if Sneha went away too. He would lose his sanity.
