A doctor here. Years ago when I shifted out of India, a lot of people questioned my choices. Including my half Indian husband. But I hadn’t studied here and although an Indian, wanted to experience the freedom that the West had provided me during my college days. Currently in India as I wanted to be near my mother due to being pregnant. When attacks on doctors happened before, people around me were like ohh, it’s unfortunate. But kya karein? Today these people spit and threw stones at two female doctors. First thing my ultra liberal husband told me -“So happy you aren’t working there.” My college friends who are practicing here are always petrified of something happening. My husband has gone mad about the whole spitting incident, especially ‘cause it was women. It’s not about religion, but look at the whole picture. To the people talking about the Hindu processions, all I know is that the ones in Kerala were punished. On the other hand, there was no stone throwing there. I have no words to express the shame I feel when I see the disrespect and sheer insubordination these people have meted out. The government, the normal public, the doctors, the opposition, nobody is to be blamed but these demons who masquerade around as people. My dream had always been to come back to India when I had a little money, to open a charitable hospital. But eff these people, man. I didn’t spend 12-13 years of my life and work my ass off to be beaten up by a bunch of morons and then have enough goodness left in me to be in servitude to them. My husband is a doctor who doesn’t even know till when PPE will last. But at least he isn’t in India, so I’m not afraid of him getting beaten to death. Yeh log deserve hi nahi karte hain seva. Hippocratic oath toh li thi, but if this is the ground reality, I don’t think India will be a place where doctors would want to practice in the future either.
Centrist hoon main. But this entire show has left very little to be said in defence of these people. Religion shouldn’t be brought in the middle, but look at the people defending these pathetic cretins on the news channels, you’ll be bringing it in, even if you do not want to.
As someone always bragging about India outside of the country, got no words to defend it today.
