Marathi speaking population is a tenth the size of India. To make apples to apples comparison, those industries need to have made 10 or so 10 crore movies a year. I think they have.
Same goes for every regional movie industry.
Come to think of it, the regional movies have left that earnings ratio far behind. Using that kind of a moneyball calculation, it's Bollywood that's running behind regional cinema. As Bollywood's own Ranveer Singh said, it's all about the RoI. Only Uri had 800+% RoI in Bollywood 2019. Dream Girl was in 2nd place if I'm not mistaken but far behind in RoI. For Kerala, most of the hits this year have been 35 cr plus in earnings with budget between 5 and 15 crores. Pretty good RoI I'd say

All the above was purely from business perspective. From quality perspective, well... there ARE masala movies like in Bollywood. Difference is that quality cinema also finds audience and churns out hits. For every Bahubali, there is a Super Deluxe. For every Bodyguard, there is a Kumbalangi Nights. In Bollywood, arthouse flicks rarely succeed and therefore, don't get made.
Then, there's is the quality of the actors. Sorry, a Ranveer or a Ranbir or a Hrithik or an Alia or a Kiara or even an Ayushman finds audience in Bollywood and gets hailed as talented, but put them beside actual actors from regional cinema, the inadequacies of the BWians will be glaring.
........
I realize TM likely made the thread to troll, but it's kind of sad to see actual art get mocked while the fingerpainting level moviemaking from Bollywood is venerated.
