Rani anyday. She is an exceptional actress, Preity was a mediocre one.
But when I was in college, Preity was the heartthrob across both genders. She was definitely more popular during her peak.
I always preferred Rani, though. She was such a powerhouse of talent. Preity had her own charm and X-factor. She had that sparkle which makes up for mediocre talent.

I was very young, but as a child I remember liking preity more because she was "cute." Kids just like cute people I guess. But now looking back, rani was a much better actress and she is still acting today. I guess talent is always the most important.
Preeti had this bubbly, chirpy, confident girl-next-door vibes when she debuted.😳 That's why she was offered very unconventional roles right from her first film. (Kya Kehna, Sangharsh, Chori Chori Chupke, The Hero... etc)👏 and she balanced it well with easy going roles like Soldier, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Koi Mil Gaya etc.
Dil Chahta Hai made her look very trendy and young. Perhaps the only actress who nailed the short-hair look, so the youngsters and children at that time connected more with her. 👍🏼
Rani, on the other hand, had a more mature, feminine charm about her despite being shorter in height & having a husky voice. Rani was/is definitely a better actress than Preeti👍🏼, but she latched on to doing mainly conventional, old-school heroine roles (either tragedy or good girl) in the early phase of her career.
Rani was equally loved and well-accepted by the audiences though.
As a fan of both, it's difficult to choose between The Khandala Girl and The Dimple Girl.😆
Preity since she had a very quirky offscreen persona
Preity was more loved and even won the SAB SE FAV... I liked her more too.. now that im older I know that Rani was/is better
Fell in love with Rani when I watched KKHH in the cinema as a little kid in 1998.
Throughout 1999, 2000, 2001 it was all about Rani vs Preity.
I ended up stanning harder for Preity during that time as she was doing far better films: Sangharsh, Kya Kehna, Dil Chahta Hai, Dil Hai Tumhara. There was a feminist girl-power attitude she carried in her interviews and that was also showcased in the films she chose.
From 2002-2006 they both had a very good run and both were running the show. I loved them in Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer-Zara, Saathiya, Black, Salaam Namaste, Bunty Aur Babli, Hum Tum, Armaan.
But at this point, so far down in both their careers, of course Rani has come out looking better. She had her revival with No One Killed Jessica in 2011 and is still going super mega strong. Waiting for Preetam to come back!
I’m guilty of liking Preity more back then. But today as an actress, Rani has won my heart. As a person, they are both trash, more so of Rani.
Rani....She is a class apart!
Rani, all because of Hum Tum❤️
