we need N95s to prevent some air borne spread . Regular masks are better but N95s are protective to go near a patient in isolation or quarantine .
Mainly virus spreads by human contact with known case for 10 mts , droplet infection when known case sneezes and cough . So N95 mask is imp precaution when treating a positive case or if u are close to positive case .

they may be doing it for their own peace of mind but there is really no point, masks only work if a person has cough. only defense against this virus is to stay home, disinfect and wash your hands frequenty. if one has to go outside, then carry hand sanitizer, don't touch your face and wash your hands and clothes as soon as you get home.

masks are needed if ur on chemo or immunocompromised . Rest is social distancing and all the above measures u mentioned.
