Actor Ranveer Singh, fresh from the blockbuster success of Dhurandhar, is facing controversy after mimicking a sacred scene from Kantara Chapter 1 during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The incident took place at the closing ceremony on November 28, where Singh reportedly performed a sequence from the Chaundi procession, a revered ritual dedicated to Goddess Chavundi, in front of the film’s lead actor, Rishab Shetty.
The performance sparked outrage among viewers and followers of the Daiva tradition. Following the incident, an FIR was lodged against Ranveer at Bengaluru’s High Grounds Police Station by advocate Prashanth Methal on Wednesday. The complaint cites Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), alleging that the actor’s act demeaned sacred elements of the ritual and involved derogatory remarks.

The complainant alleged that the act mocked a highly revered part of the Daiva tradition and hurt religious sentiments. The FIR adds that the mimicry was inappropriate and disrespectful towards cultural practices and sacred symbols.
Following the backlash, Ranveer Singh issued a public apology on social media on December 2. The actor, 40, clarified his intentions, stating, “My intention was to highlight Rishab's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.”
On the professional front, Ranveer continues to ride the success of Dhurandhar, which released in December 2025 and grossed over Rs 1,000 crore domestically within three weeks, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year in India.
Looking ahead, he is slated to appear in Dhurandhar: The Revenge, set to release on March 19, 2026. The film is expected to clash at the box office with Yash’s Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups. Meanwhile, the FIR filed in Bengaluru is likely to trigger legal proceedings, keeping the controversy alive as discussions around cultural sensitivity and respect for traditions gain attention across social media and news platforms.
