Chhapaak not doing well is not because of the clash. It's a deglam movie on a very serious issue. It would have done same business without clash too.

Edited to add-

Reducing it to a woman centric film is not ok.

Chhapaak is on a very serious social issue. It is not a woman centric movie. promoting it as a social work film did not affect its business. They could not sell this as a masala entertaining movie because it is not.

Better to stay honest with the audience and promote it as a social film. Phir chahe audience movie Dekh ne aaye ya na aaye.

Meghna and Deepika have done great job promoting the movie and by not backing down from the clash.

They don't need to be ashamed of anything. They have done their best.

Many niche masala movies become hit at 20 crores.

There is nothing to be ashamed of for Deepika and her fans.

I am proud of Deepika for working in a movie like Chhapaak.

Target audience is different. It doesn’t matter.

Movies still make money as long as there is some buzz or some interest of the target audience. If people like it the WOM will translate no matter if critics praise it or anything else.

We saw how WOM can earn huge numbers. Look at URI numbers. Lately ayushmans movies. If people like it it doesn’t matter if there is a clash or not.
chhapaak was for the multiplex and it didn’t click with everybody even if it’s liked or people are praising it. The WOM is not good for the movie or else it would earn as much or even more like opening day.

I watched the film and it was well made other than the multiple flashbacks which were confusing as hell. You miss 2 minutes and you would be confused.

Chhapaak did not do well due to the stupid promotional strategy. It was a real threat to Tanhaji before the following dumb things done.

Firstly the promotions included Laxmi and other acid attack victims very late. Neerja was also a biopic that too by an actress who has likited acting talent but Sonam and team highlighted Neerja’s name and her family, which is what worked. Sarabjit (which was not well made) also included Daljit Kaur in promotions along with Ash. Had the film been well made it would’ve worked.

Secondly the promotions were mainly about Deepika’s comeback. It seemed too narcissistic. It should’ve had more focus on acid attack and victims.

Thirdly Deepika turning up at JNU when political scenarios in the country are risky and bad. Every time the audience sided with DP regarding films, it wasnt her fault. Like Padmaavat. But here when the county is waking up and chosing sides this was the stupidest move ever. I liked Ajay’s statement...he chose to keep the focus on the film, not turn it towards him or his political stand.

I wish the promotional team would have made some smart decisions and choices. Deepika and Meghana should have also chosen better methods and tactics for promotion. Vikrant should’ve also been a bigger part of the promotions. Alok Dixit was a major part of Laxmi’s life before they split.

Good movie will do well irrespective of which it clashed with --

Padman and Padmavat were reelased on the same day --- Padman was a hit...

Bang bang and Haider clashed --- Haider not only became a critically acclaimed movie, but also fetched Shahid the "Best Actor" award apart from establishing him as an a sterling actor.

Not even bringing in Lagaan and Gadar as another member has already done it.

On the other hand, clashing two movies might affect both the movies adversely. Case in point Kaabil and Raees (both had stars like Hrithik and Shahrukh) and ADHM and Shivaay.

So movies that connect with audience will do well despite facing a clash.

I think first of all we should let go of this classification..a film should be promoted as a film, a story ..not male or female centric..and should be promoted by its leads. Even in what we call men centric movies we see the heroines always promoting them..no matter whats the size of their role..

Coz the minute u classify a movie as a kid centric, female or male centric it becomes niche..a certain section makes up a mind not to watch it. Like teens and youth won't watch a kiddie movie so its restricted to families ( mostly one parent n kids😆)

men may not prefer to watch a woman centric story thinking it may be full of emotions or melodrama..that is unless their wife or gf drags them..

Women who prefer emotional drama won't watch n adrenaline filled men centric action movie..

It's all about the right promotions to show that this movie is for all unless u r looking for a limited release

THIS👍🏼

I love this point you made. I agree, films should not be classified this way. Because even women-centric movies can be full on entertaining ( Veere di wedding) or masala-oriented(The Dirty Picture).

It's when it becomes niche, that it presents a problem.

Deepika's role was beyond unglamorous (I can count Deepika in Lagangey Parindey, Alia in Udta Punjab, Super 30’s Hrithik as unglamorous).

Why exactly should viewers spend money for? To watch Deepika? This movie is not the one. Her acting ? Average. Inspiring story? We can hear Lakshmi’s talk. Looks are Deepika's USP. That was missing in the movie.

This movie would not have done well even without clash, even without JNU controversy.

Even though Nirja had a sad ending, she saved many lives and it looked inspirational. Chapaak which shows another woman getting attacked at the end made sure, film is depressing from beginning to end. Also Sonam looked cute in Nirja. Deepika was not.

I think Panga will do well because it looks entertaining. If the movie is fun, men/womencentric label will not matter. I think Panga will go in Queen's way.

Before release: Tanhaji has zero buzz, chhapaak will win the clash. Yay!

After release and durdasha at BO: Clash was a mistake. This movie was different genre. This movie wouldn’t have won the clash. Eh!
