I think they are fresh mangoes in a box with a rotten mango called MJ. You know how one rotten mango rots the rest as well? Rudra's exterior got affected, and he chose to walk away with his core of goodness and hope intact but with a hell lot of external unhappiness, and rage directed at MJ.

Maya on the other hand succumbed to it, heart and soul and decided to complete the decaying process coz she wanted to ruin MJ.

Remember Rudra's dialogue once about how he still has hope? Pretty much that.

And also, Maya's dialogue of, khatre mein insaan khudko bachata hai ya apne andar ke insaan ko.

Rudra saved the insaan in him. Maya saved herself to ensure MJ lost himself the way she lost the insaan in her.

So I think they were compartments of the same train where one chose not to follow the engine to doom - Rudra
