movie review---Midway

.

The movie takes us on a considerable sweep of history in the second world war . It begins before the Japanese air attack on Pearl harbour , when Japanese admiral Yamamoto ( Jun Kunimura ) warns the Americans that if they threaten their oil supplies then Japan will have to go to war . The war begins for America as Pearl harbour in Hawai gets bombarded by Japan's carrier based air fleet . The visuals of the attack are well picturised with bombs falling and warships going up in yellow flames and anti aircraft fire coming rapidly at the attacking aircraft like tracer bullets .

In revenge America bombs the Japanese capital Tokyo by bombers led by Lt colonel Doolittle flying from aircraft carriers and landing in Japanese controlled China as they don't have the range to come back . At the end of the movie we are informed that the Japanese killed 250000 Chinese in revenge for helping the bomber crew escape . There is a debate going in favour of the army in Japan but the Japanese are so stung by the raid that they plan a naval invasion of Midway islands in the pacific .

As the Japanese fleet of four aircraft carriers closes on to Midway , the Americans have used intercepts of Japanese signals to find out their target . They also correctly find out location of their fleet , while the Japanese are unaware of this fact . This is the only advantage lying with the Americans , whose carrier borne fighter planes are outclassed in technology and numbers by the Japanese fighter planes . Also the Americans have only two aircraft carriers fully fit and the third is pressganged into service even though she ( ships are refereed to as 'she' many times by sailors ) has a huge hole in her flight deck , caused by a Japanese bomb in the battle of the Coral sea .

As the two sides press their advantages , it's the Americans who surprise the Japanese fleet by dive bombing them by dive bombers . The whole act of dive bombing has been repeatedly picturized beautifully in the film . The fighter plane begins it's steep dive on it's target from a great height . As it begins to close in , it is challenged by swathes of anti aircraft fire that must be terrifying for anyone in the cockpit . Running this gauntlet , the fighter plane dives to the height at which the bomb has to be released . After it releases the bomb , the plane has the unenviable task of turning up again from it's dive while the warship explodes in flames and acrid smoke which threatens even the plane flying just above it .

The Japanese have their own martial traditions , and their commanding officers go down with their ships refusing to get rescued because the responsibility of failure lies on them and honour is a valued thing in the orient . As four Japanese carriers are bombed to oblivion and sunk , finally the advantage shifts to the Americans in the Pacific war .

The movie is action packed and will be enjoyed by aficionados of war movies . It also takes us into the war rooms where war strategies are planned between the rival forces . Photography is great and the warships are shown sailing in full glory in the open sea silhouetted against the sun . Music is enthralling towards the end and acting by everyone is okay .

Verdict---Good .

Three and a half stars out of five .

HELEN ( Malayalam)

A survival thriller movie revolves around the life of Helen. This movie though a thriller genre gives due importance to family relationships and it has a subtle reference to the moral policing trends and the preoccupied notions of many who consider the love of every Muslim man - non-muslim woman as love Jihad. The story mainly focuses on Helen who aspires to work in Canada and eventually clears IELTS but one night becomes the turning point in her life. Will she survive at the end or not will make the story gripping even before the second half.

What is good?

The direction of debut director Mathukutty xavier is extremely good which made the small film a gripping one.

Performance-wise Anna Ben was excellent in this film and the girl is undoubtedly the best actress in malayalam cinema. Lal as the father of Helen and Aju varghese's role as shady police officer is Commentable too .

Bajirao Mastani- Bajirao and Mastani's love story reminded me of everything a twin flame relationship goes through from having some sort of difference like religious difference to having to go through so many hurdles to society not accepting their relationship to bringing new perspective in the world around them and going against societal norms, orthodox rules. It was a complete twin flame relationship whereas Bajirao and Kashi were like soulmates who were more like friends than lovers. Loved the movie and everyone's performances. It is a brilliant masterpiece by SLB.

NH10- Anushka Sharma's best performance and best movie for me. She was brilliant throughout the movie. Loved how they reflected on crimes like honour killing in this movie. We need more awareness about such stuff.

Bang bang- Loved HR-Kat chemistry and the last part was brilliant. Loved the action scenes. Katrina looked her hottest in this movie. HR was hot. Can be watched if you are fan of either of these two.

Golmaal again- Parineeti was so good in this movie. Loved her performance and the whole cast was amazing. Loved the movie. It can be watched multiple times.

Padmaavat- Deepika's best performance for me. Loved the movie. Brilliantly enacted. Can be watched multiple times. I cry every time I watch the last part of this movie.

Simmba- Ranveer was really good. Any other actor would have been irritating in this role. But he was pleasant and fun to watch in the beginning part of the movie. He slayed in the emotional scenes. I cried a lot watching this movie. Loved everyone's performances. Loved Ajay's part. He was brilliant as usual.

Bikram: Yogi, Guru , Predator

This was an eye opening documentary not to mention infuriating. Cocky, Manipulative, Dumb And Extremely Dangerous. I cannot believe a country like US has been unable to extradite him when his victims have openly made charges. Had it been about money instead of rape , he would have been rotting in jail. But instead he is doing the same shit in different parts of the world and women are actually attending his training. Appalling. His whole personality reminded me of 2 people, Trump and Kangana. 🤮🤢

Kaithi

.

I knew that I was gonna love this movie when a throwaway line in the first 10 minutes mentions the presence of a Gatling gun. And the payoff which comes around 2 hours later is glorious!!!

It's not very common to have an action movie with such a strong emotional core at its centre. The last one which comes to mind is that Legendary Nic Cage starrer on a plane full of convicts. The action in Kaithi is confined to 2 locations, one a lorry filled with the macguffin, a bunch of cops on whom a bounty has been set by a ruthless gangster. And the other inside a blockaded police precinct wherein the second macguffin is present. A whole Lotta drugs.

The superbly economical storytelling is aided by some sensational old fashioned maar dhaad, great night time cinematography and a genuine sense of tension.Lokesh Kanagaraj does not believe in unnecessary flashbacks. Although I enjoyed his directorial debut, this one is a solid improvement. He knows that to have a truly memorable mass moment, the audience needs to get invested in the characters and their motivations. I wish the director of this movies competition took notes from this.Plus Sam CS pulls off a stylish score very unlike which u get in a mass flick

And then there's the star at the centre. Whether it's emotional breakdown that the character has when he talks of his past or whether it's doing a picture perfect neck breaker on a baddie, this is the seminal action movie performance of the year by a long shot.

Book your tickets. It's one hell of a ride. Paavangalude Con Air

Rating: 3 / 5 ( Good )

Waiting for the sequel :)

Bigil

.

With Bigil, Atlee delivers one of Vijay's better actorly outings at the expense of his mass avatar. Don't get me wrong,he does the usual Vijayisms like the chewing gum trick and the forces attempts at comedy. But this time,he is backed up by some solid sentiments and emotions. But as a sports flick, Bigil sucks big time.

.

There's not an iota of research nay basic sports knowledge that has gone into creating the football scenes. Each and every goal scored by the TN team consists of some weird aerodynamic acrobatics. For a team game,we don't see any dribbling, through passes or teamwork. It's apparently as if the makers decided, you guys have come to see Vijay, why on earth would you bother about the supporting acts.

.

The fight scenes are very ordinary and lack any sort of thrill. ARR's score does the heavy lifting when any attempt is made to induce tears in the audience. The tracks are used well, especially Singappenney with a surprise cameo.

.

Vijay puts in a decent effort in both his roles , although to be honest a better actor would have worked wonders with this role. But he does irritate with his usual mannerisms in the comic scenes. Nayantara cashes in an easy paycheck, while looking ravishing. Tiger ka Baap does initially show promise to be a threatening villain, but then retreats into the shadows once Vijay's Bigil avatar takes over. There is a stereotypical Neil Nitin Mukesh type villain who is played this time by Kabir Singh's brother. And yeah, when you want to cast a north Chennai baddie,Daniel Balaji should always be on your speed dial

.

Ultimately, it's the father son sentiment and the women empowerment angle which saves this movie. The acid attack Survivor episodes and the episodes with the player turned housewife are powerful and well acted.

.

Bigil isn't great art. But as a 3 hour theater watch,it is never boring

Mission Mangal:

How irritating is Akshay Kumar. He ruined the movie experience for me. This endearing story ruined by his presence and sleep walking.

Special mention to Dalip Tahil. He changed his accent.
