Get under heavy furniture till the tremors are gone. Stay away from beams. If in a car stay in till the tremors stop. Don't take elevators instead take stairs to get down if you are above the ground floor. Having torch with you always helps. Stay away from plugged in electronics.

Hope there is no casualities or destruction at your place stay safe. Aftershocks are not as powerful as the first tremors but can be felt strongly. Stay safe.

thats true.......but somehow I feel there will be more freedom of motion and the person can run n try to save one-self if he / she is on the road, compare to in a car......... what if the doors dont open in time...what if some heavy rock blocks the door........ but of course they must be having good reason to put that as a precautionary measure...

No precaution is foolproof or 100% safe. All the risks u mentioned are a serious possibility but there is also a possibility of one being safe in a cocoon rather than running helter-skelter. One should also not run mindlessly instead lay down on the ground till the tremors stop. Japanese teach the precautionary techniques even to their toddlers. I think we all should too. They are prepared 24/7.
